What you would seeLo que verías

This black-and-white engraving presents a horizontal procession occupying the lower half of the sheet, seen at eye level and slightly foreshortened to the right. In the foreground, a line of standing men in profile and three-quarter view moves slowly to the right; they wear togas and tunics rendered with dense parallel and cross-hatching to suggest deep folds, some clutching books or tablets, others with arms folded beneath the chest. Their faces, bald or with curly hair, bear solemn expressions. A small child among them gazes directly outward at the viewer. To the right, soldiers close the group, clad in armor, plumed helmets, oval shields embossed with grotesque masks, long spears and a palm frond. The architectural background fills the upper half: a brick building with two large arches hung with garlands, a small pedimented window and balconies where tiny onlookers peer out. Further back on the right rises a crenellated cylindrical stone tower under a hatched sky. Light is even and diffused, modeling forms through fine linear shading that gives volume to fabrics, metal and masonry. The texture is crisp and precise, characteristic of engraving, with minute details in beards, sandals and decorative motifs.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the central row of senators, following their gaze to the right where armored soldiers anchor the procession. Then lift your eyes to the arches and balconies to find the small spectators looking down. Notice the richly decorated shields and the child who interrupts the solemn line by looking out, a detail that softens the formality.

ContextContexto

The source identifies the work as The Triumph of Caesar: The Senators, an engraving dated to about the late 1400s, by Giovanni Antonio da Brescia after a design by Andrea Mantegna (Italian, about 1431–1506). It belongs to Italian culture of the late 15th to early 16th century and is housed in the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. Mantegna’s Triumphs of Caesar series, widely circulated as prints, imagines an ancient Roman triumphal procession, a theme highly valued in the Renaissance for its evocation of classical antiquity. No further description is given in the source. The image is not a record of a documented historical event but an idealized reconstruction of Roman ceremony, made possible by copperplate engraving which allowed broad dissemination.

Curious detailDato curioso

Mantegna’s Triumphs of Caesar designs became one of the most copied models in Europe, influencing paintings, sculptures and court festivals for over a century through these printed versions.

I focus on the engraving technique with burin on copper, that network of fine and crosshatched lines that gives volume to the togas and metals without needing color. The black and white here is not an absence, it is precision. Notice how each fold, each beard and each ornament on the shield is built with parallel hatching. It is a work made to be reproduced and to travel, and that is why its texture remains crisp over time, with firm outlines and even shading that holds the whole procession together.

What catches my eye is the horizontal order of the procession, as if it were a constellation moving forward. The record says it is an idealized Renaissance reconstruction, not a documented event. I see senators with books and tablets in front and soldiers with plumed helmets closing the line, all at the same eye level. The brick building with its two arches and the cylindrical tower in the background act as a stable horizon to measure that slow movement to the right.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are so many people walking together! They all go in a line to the right with their long togas that look like sheets with lots of little lines. I like to look for tiny details, like the sandals, the shields with funny faces and the garlands on the arches. And in the middle of so many serious men there is a little girl looking straight at us, as if she just spotted us. Up on the balconies, there are very tiny people also watching the parade go by.
