What you would seeLo que verías

This woodcut in black ink on cream paper presents a dense, bustling scene beneath a rustic shelter. In the left foreground, the Virgin Mary kneels in a long draped gown and veil, gently holding the cloth where the naked Christ Child lies in a woven straw manger. Beside her stands a bearded older man — Joseph — leaning forward with open hands in attentive wonder. The center and right are dominated by three shepherds captured in vigorous motion: one kneeling on the ground with a lamb at his feet, another seen from behind raising a cloth or hat above his head, and a third pulling a cow and a donkey into the scene. The animals are muscular and finely hatched, shown in foreshortening next to a fluted classical column that contrasts with the rough timber of the stable. The roof is thatch and broken planks, with two doves perched above. In the background, through the wooden posts, a mountainous landscape opens with a solitary tree and two additional shepherds peering over a low wall. Light is created through dense cross-hatching and fine parallel lines that give texture to stone, straw, folded drapery and fur. Small details such as the monogram «B» in the lower left corner and the grain of the wood add richness to the tightly composed image.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the intimate group of Mary and the Child on the left, then follow the diagonal thrust of the shepherds and animals to the right. Notice the contrast between the central stillness and the earthy energy of the shepherds, and how the distant landscape frames the action.

ContextContexto

The work is a woodcut titled Adoration of the Shepherds attributed to Niccolò Boldrini (Italian, c. 1500–after 1566), active in Venice in the early to mid-1500s, according to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is housed in the Prints department. Woodcut was a key medium for disseminating religious imagery in Renaissance Italy. The scene depicts the biblical episode of the Christ Child visited by shepherds, with the ruined architecture a common motif alluding to the ancient world. No further details about its commission or exact date are given in the source record, probably between 1530 and 1550.

Curious detailDato curioso

Niccolò Boldrini is best known for cutting woodblocks after designs by Titian, and this print shows his skill in translating Venetian painting into the vigorous linear language of the woodcut.

I pause to look at how the black ink sits on the creamy paper, how firmly it marks every line. This woodcut by Boldrini is a mesh of cross-hatching that mimics the volume of stone, the braided straw of the manger and the heavy folds of cloaks. I am fascinated by the fluted column next to the rough, broken wood of the shed, and by the monogram with letter B at the lower left. All the contrast of light is built by carving lines, not with color.

I always look for where the light comes from, and here there are no stars or bright halos, but a carved light. The scene is dense and crowded under a rustic hovel, yet in the background a mountainous landscape opens with a solitary tree cut out against the clear sky of the paper. I like to imagine the two doves on the roof are observation points, like us peering curiously over a wall alongside the two shepherds in the back who lean in to see the Child.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

So many things are happening at once! Mary is kneeling and caring for Baby Jesus in his little straw crib and Joseph looks at him with open hands as if saying how lovely! One shepherd brings a little lamb, another lifts his hat as if waving hello and another pulls the cow and the donkey which look huge and muscular. Up on the roof there are two tiny doves watching everything. I like counting the animals and the shepherds who are everywhere.
