What you would seeLo que verías
Black-and-white print in horizontal format, with a nervous, sketch-like quality. In the center and to the left, a dense mass of trees with leafy crowns dominates, rendered with tangled, crosshatched, heavily scribbled lines; the trunks are thin and vertical, slightly leaning. Behind the vegetation, on a small hill, a faint architectural group appears: perhaps a church or castle with a dome and low walls, suggested with minimal strokes. To the right, the landscape opens up: two younger, slender trees appear almost linear, and above them the sky is filled with puffy clouds drawn with loose outlines and horizontal hatching. The foreground is uneven ground, with grass and rocks hinted at through diagonal scratches and darker ink patches. Light feels diffuse, without strong contrast, and the edge of the image shows printing irregularities and ink smudges, with slightly darkened corners and an ivory-toned paper support. Near the lower left, a small signature or inscription merges with the hatching.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the dark tangle on the left and follow the lines toward the pale silhouette of the building on the hill. Notice how the fine strokes of clouds and sky balance the weight of the shaded trees. Look at the smudges and uneven edges that reveal the handcrafted nature of the print.

Curious detailDato curioso
Cliché-verre was used by Corot and other Barbizon painters as a hybrid between drawing and photography: they scratched a design into a soot-coated glass plate with a needle and then exposed it to light to produce photographic prints without a printing press.

I focus on how this print was made. It is an 1855 cliché-verre printed in 1921, ink on ivory paper. I see the nervous, almost scribbled stroke, with tangles of lines forming the dense tree canopies on the left. I notice the darker ink blots in the foreground and the irregularities along the border, traces of the photographic process. It is not a polished drawing, it is a quick memory, a souvenir of Ostia fixed with light and glass.

I look at the sky and wonder what time it was in Ostia. The puffy clouds are drawn with loose outlines and horizontal hatching that fill the entire upper right band. The light is diffuse, without strong contrast, like a cloudy summer afternoon. I like that on the right the landscape opens up and lets the sky show, while on the left the leafy trees cover everything. That contrast between closed and open makes me think about the horizon and distance.

It looks like someone drew very fast with lots of scribbles. The trees on the left are like a giant ball of doodles and their trunks are thin crooked little sticks. On the right there are two skinnier little trees that look lonely. I like the little grass made with diagonal lines and the dark spots that are like rocks. In the back, on top of a little hill, there is a small house with a dome that you can barely see because the trees hide it. It is like a hiding place.
