Hand-colored engraving
What you would seeLo que verías
This hand-colored engraving presents a wide urban square in an elongated perspective, seen from a slightly elevated viewpoint. In the foreground, the ground is uneven and stony, rendered in ochre and gray tones that suggest packed earth and irregular cobblestones with puddles. At the center moves a bright yellow coach with tall wheels, drawn by two white horses, surrounded by tiny figures. On the left, in the immediate foreground, two men carry bundles of sticks on their shoulders, wearing greenish and yellow jackets. Scattered across the square are dozens of silhouettes in long cloaks and hats, in intense reds, greens, blues and yellows, painted with simple but vivid strokes. On the left dominates a large Gothic building of pale stone, with a pointed traceried window, buttresses, brick chimneys and an archway below; likely Westminster Hall, with rough textures and sienna shading. In the background more medieval structures and Gothic towers rise under a graded sky, deep turquoise blue at the top fading to a pale pinkish white toward the horizon. On the right, a continuous row of tall, narrow townhouses in early Georgian style, with beige facades and gray roofs, lines the street. The light is diffuse and even, without strong shadows, and the hand-applied color is flat, sometimes bleeding beyond the engraved lines. Inverted text appears at the top and an English title at the bottom.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the yellow coach at the center and follow the square receding into the hazy distance. Then focus on the large Gothic building on the left and on the small figures in red cloaks, which give scale and everyday life to the monumental architecture.

The text at the top appears reversed because these views were made to be seen reflected in an optical viewer called a zograscope, which created an illusion of depth.

I focus on how this print was made. It is a hand-colored engraving from 1706, and you can tell by the flat color that sometimes bleeds outside the lines. The stony ground with ochre and grey puddles, the sky fading from turquoise to a pinkish white and the intense reds of the cloaks were applied with thin watery pigments. These optical views were mass-produced, and the inverted text at the top and bottom shows it was meant to be viewed with a perspective device. The gothic building on the left, Westminster Hall, survived the fire of 1834 and still stands.

What captivates me most is the sky. It takes up a wide band and is painted as a gradient, from an intense turquoise blue at the top fading toward the horizon into an almost pinkish white. There are no clouds, just that soft transition that gives depth to the elongated square. The view is taken from a slightly elevated point, as if we were looking from a balcony. That stretched perspective is typical of 18th-century vue d'optique, made to create an illusion of depth. The light is even and diffuse, with no strong shadows, letting the sky become the atmospheric focus.

I love looking for tiny people in this square! There are many little figures with cloaks in candy colors, red, blue, green and yellow. In front there are two men carrying bundles of wood on their shoulders with greenish and yellow jackets. In the middle there is a yellow carriage with two white horses that looks like a toy because the people next to it look so small. The ground is all muddy with little puddles. On the right there is a super long row of little beige houses stuck together and on the left a light stone castle with pointy windows.
