Plain weave cotton: embroidered ("chikan" type)

What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal rectangular textile fragment is shown centered against a very dark, almost black background that makes its pale tones stand out. The piece is much wider than it is tall and retains plain, unembroidered strips of fabric along its upper and lower edges. The cloth looks thin, lightweight, and slightly translucent, in off-white and light gray tones, with frayed borders, loose threads, small tears along the bottom edge, and a few tiny brownish spots near the top. Almost the entire central band is covered with dense white and cream embroidery. Large rounded, almost circular flowers repeat across the surface, filled with tiny, tightly packed stitches that give them a grainy, raised texture. Around them curl slender vines, small leaves, buds, dots, and tiny star-like flowers, worked in fine relief. Pale blue-gray shadow lines subtly outline some petals and stems. Along the bottom runs a narrower border of elongated leaves or paisley-like forms, and below that, a neat geometric band of symmetrical leaves lies between dotted lines. The overall impression is monochromatic yet rich: the design reveals itself through relief, shadow, and patient repetition, like lace carved out of cloth. No figures, letters, or objects other than the textile itself are visible.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the piece from a distance and notice how the pattern emerges only through texture and shadow, without color contrast. Then move closer to the large flowers and follow the vines that connect them until you reach the leafy lower border. Finally, look at the frayed edges: they remind us that this is a fragment, not a complete garment.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this piece as a fragment of a cap band made in Lucknow, India, between 1880 and 1899, by an unknown maker. It is in the Textiles Department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, which acquired it through the J. H. Wade Fund. The technique is embroidery of the "chikan" type on plain-weave cotton. Lucknow is widely known for this hand embroidery tradition, characterized by white thread on light fabric and floral motifs. The maker's name, the identity of the wearer, and the history of the complete cap are not recorded; probably only this band survived or was separated from the original piece.

Curious detailDato curioso

In chikan embroidery, part of the effect is traditionally achieved with stitches worked from the reverse side, so the design appears as a soft shadow through the fine cotton: here, the decoration is meant to be discovered by light as much as by sight.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I pause at how fragile and patient this cap band fragment from Lucknow made between 1880 and 1899 feels. On thin, almost translucent cotton in bone-white, the white and cream chikan embroidery forms circular flowers with a grainy raised texture, fine stems and an orderly border of symmetrical leaves between dotted lines. I see frayed edges, loose threads, small tears at the bottom and tiny brownish spots near the upper edge that speak of age. It is white on white, but relief and shadow reveal all the handwork.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I see here a sky embroidered in negative. Against the dark background that frames it, the pale rectangular fragment looks like a strip of constellations: large round flowers like full moons, tiny star-shaped blossoms, dots and curling stems like orbits. The chikan embroidery in white and cream on light cotton creates relief and very soft bluish gray shadows that reveal shapes only through light. It is curious to think this band once adorned a cap in nineteenth century India and today it shines through its serene repetition.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I see a little magic strip that looks like fluffy snow. It is long and full of chubby soft flowers like popcorn, with little leaves and starry blossoms stitched in relief as if you could touch them. The fabric is very thin and light, bone-white and cream, with frayed edges and loose threads because it is very old, from more than a hundred years ago in India. At the bottom there is a neat row of droplet-shaped leaves like a tidy border. I like it because everything is white but when you look close you see many hidden little drawings.
