What you would seeLo que verías

This vertical drawing, done in dark crayon on tan paper, shows a compact cluster of rustic buildings seen from slightly above. In the foreground, at the bottom center and right, stand three large structures with thick walls, steeply pitched or curved corrugated-looking roofs, small square windows, and tall arched doorways. One has a distinctive latticed opening above its entrance, like a grid of small panes. A narrow path curves around them, where a crouched figure seems to work over a bowl, and another figure climbs steps carrying something on their head. In the middle ground, more houses with overlapping roofs climb a slope connected by stairs, with two tiny figures at the top of one flight. The upper background is filled with dense, dark, swirling vegetation and thick, twisted tree trunks on the right. On the left, a thin tree with a sparse canopy frames the scene. The palette is almost monochrome: black, charcoal gray, warm browns, and the cream of the paper, which serves as light on walls and ground. The crayon grain is visible everywhere, with heavy shading, soft smudges, and parallel strokes marking the roofs. The artist's signature, 'Louise B. Maloney,' appears handwritten at lower left.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the rooftops and follow their overlapping rhythm downhill toward the arched doors in the foreground. Then look for the tiny human figures on the steps: they give scale to buildings that might otherwise seem like toy models. Finally, compare the dense, dark vegetation at the top with the lighter, emptier ground at the bottom.

ContextContexto

Ox Stalls is a crayon drawing by American artist Louise B. Maloney (1887-1973), made before 1926, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds the work in its Drawings department. The museum credits it as a Gift of The Print Club of Cleveland and associates it with Cleveland, Ohio. The source provides no description and does not identify the place depicted, so it is not known whether this hillside settlement is a real location, a place observed while traveling, or an imagined scene. Probably, the title refers to the rustic buildings in the foreground, understood as stalls or barns rather than houses.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite the title Ox Stalls, there is not a single ox in the drawing: the only living figures are a few tiny, almost hidden people on the stairs and paths.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why do you think the artist titled the work after ox stalls when animals are absent and the buildings dominate everything?¿Por qué crees que la artista tituló la obra por los establos de bueyes si los animales no aparecen y los edificios lo dominan todo?
  2. Does this place feel welcoming, lonely, or timeless, and which visual choices create that feeling?¿Este lugar se siente acogedor, solitario o fuera del tiempo, y qué decisiones visuales provocan esa sensación?
  3. How would the reading of the scene change if the tiny human figures were removed?¿Cómo cambiaría la lectura de la escena si se quitaran las diminutas figuras humanas?

I pause to see how the dark crayon clings to the grain of the toasted paper, leaving a velvety veil in the shadows and parallel hatching on those overlapping roofs that look like corrugated sheeting. I love the economy of means: black, charcoal gray and warm brown, with the cream of the paper acting as light on walls and ground. The signature at the lower left, «Louise B. Maloney», anchors a vertical drawing with an elevated viewpoint held together by soft smudging and firm lines.

This elevated view makes me think of observing from a hill at dawn, when diffuse light still does not cast hard shadows. The hamlet climbs the slope with stairways linking overlapping roofs, and in the foreground I see three thick-walled volumes with small square windows and arched doors. I am curious about that entrance with a little grid-like lattice above it, like a vent filter. The dark, swirling vegetation at the top closes the horizon like a dense night over the village with no oxen in sight.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a village of stacked little houses like building blocks where you can go up and down tiny stairs. Down below there are three big houses with curved roofs and little stripes, and a door with tiny squares on top that looks like a play window. There are very small people: one crouching with a container and another carrying something on the head up the steps, plus two more on top. Everything is done in dark crayon on toasted paper, and behind there are many dark trees and crooked trunks making shade.

Made with dark crayon on toasted paper, the cream of the paper is my light. What element on the left frames the scene with a sparse crown and thin trunk?

    HintPista

Check the left edge, it is tall and lets you see the houses behind.

  3. #3

In the foreground I have arched doors and small square windows, and above one entrance there is a small grid lattice. What color is the paper that lights up my walls and ground?

    HintPista

It is not white paint, it is the warm tone of the support left visible.
