What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical lithograph in black ink on ivory paper. At the bottom edge, cropped by the frame, a man lies on his back with his head tilted upward; only his bearded face, dark tousled hair, neck and the top of a light, loosely sketched shirt are visible, his gaze directed upward. Above him dominates a tall double-door cabinet with simple rectangular panels, rendered with firm vertical lines and agitated diagonal hatching that evokes gloom and shifting shadows. Resting on top of the cabinet is a classical bust of Pallas Athena, recognizable by her tall helmet and soft features, left almost white so it seems to glow like marble. Perched directly on the helmet is a small, intensely black raven in profile, a compact silhouette set against a turbulent cloud of brushy, grainy lithographic washes. The composition stacks three zones: the supine observer below, the architectural threshold in the middle, and the bust-and-raven icon at the top. The handling is sketchy and expressive, with streaked washes, splatters and textured blacks contrasting sharply with reserved paper, while a low light appears to rise from below, casting dramatic, slanting shadows across the whole scene.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the light from the man's upturned face up along the cabinet doors to the luminous bust, then to the tiny dark raven at the very top. Notice how the rough, diagonal inking makes the white bust and the black bird stand out as opposing poles of the story.

ContextContexto

This is a work by Édouard Manet (French, 1832–1883) dated 1875, made to illustrate Stéphane Mallarmé's French translation of Edgar Allan Poe's 1845 poem The Raven. The poem tells of a grieving man visited at night by a raven that repeats the word 'Nevermore'. According to source data, Mallarmé's 1875 edition is regarded as one of the earliest modern livres d'artistes, books conceived as artworks in themselves. The Cleveland Museum of Art notes that Manet contributed four full-page lithographs, including this moment with the raven staring from atop the bust of Athena, plus a raven-head motif used on the cover and advertising poster. The print exemplifies French graphic art of the 19th century and the dialogue between literature and visual modernism.

Curious detailDato curioso

Manet's stark raven-head design migrated beyond the book itself to become both the cover emblem and the image for the edition's advertising poster, helping to promote Mallarmé's translation.

  1. How does the cropping of the man's body affect your sense of vulnerability or intimacy?¿Cómo cambia la sensación de la escena si imaginas que el hombre está soñando o alucinando?
  2. Why might Manet have chosen to keep the raven small yet the darkest mark on the page?¿Por qué crees que Manet hizo al cuervo tan pequeño y tan negro frente al busto blanco y luminoso?
  3. What mood is created by the loose, smudged lithographic strokes compared to a finely detailed engraving?¿Qué transmite el trazo rápido y manchado frente a un dibujo detallado y pulido?

What catches my eye is the contrast between the deep black of the raven and the ivory, almost cream paper. Look how Manet uses lithography to achieve those grainy sweeps, splatters and diagonal shading on the furniture. The white of the bust of Pallas is not paint, it is reserved paper, lit from below. At the bottom, the bearded man is just suggested with loose brushstrokes, cropped by the edge, as if darkness were swallowing him.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me it is a suspended nocturnal scene. The poem takes place at midnight and here everything is half-light: the stained background like an ink cloud, the cabinet acting as a threshold between the observer and the sky. The raven, small and black in silhouette, stands out like an astronomical shape, a tiny eclipse over the pale marble of Athena. The light rising from below creates a dramatic chiaroscuro, as if a lamp or the moon lit that division into three bands from the ground.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The little black bird is standing on top of a statue with a helmet, as if it were its hat. Below there is a bearded man lying down looking at it with big eyes, he seems scared or tired. Everything is in black and white and gray, except the paper which is like cookie color. The big furniture in the middle looks like a giant door. The raven looks tiny but it is the boss, because it is the blackest of all and shines in the darkness.
