What you would seeLo que verías

Black-and-white engraving in vertical format with an arched top. The upper half shows a dark sky densely hatched with clouds and small pale flecks suggesting stars or radiance. At the top center, Christ appears inside a circular halo of cherubs and rays, arms outstretched, with a robe falling in vertical folds that end in a sharp beam of light directed toward the earth. Below, the landscape opens with craggy rocks on both sides, leafy trees with rounded canopies, and in the distance a walled town with towers and domes among rolling hills. The foreground is packed with tumultuous figures: soldiers in armor, helmets, round shields and spears, rearing horses and fallen men. Near the lower center, an armored man lies on his back with arms open, overwhelmed, while a companion tries to support him. Around him other soldiers shield their eyes, recoil or collapse, and a horseman on the right raises a banner. Details of chain mail, horse manes and rocky textures are rendered with fine crosshatched lines that create volume, light and a strong sense of motion across the crowded scene.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the beam of light descending from Christ at the top and follow it down to the fallen man at the center. Then notice the contrast between the chaos in the foreground — horses, weapons and bodies on the ground — and the calm distant landscape with the town. Look at how the repeated gesture of shielding the eyes connects all the figures in a shared reaction.

ContextContexto

Work titled The Conversion of Saint Paul, attributed to Matteo di Giovanni, a painter and printmaker active in Siena around 1435 to 1495, dated to the late 1400s. It is an engraving in the prints collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The scene depicts the biblical account from the Acts of the Apostles, when Saul falls from his horse on the road to Damascus, blinded by a heavenly light and hearing the voice of Christ. The subject was popular in the Renaissance for its drama and expressive potential. Printmaking allowed religious images to circulate widely. Specific details about the commission or original use of this impression are not recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso

Engravings from the late 15th century like this one were printed on laid paper and collected almost like small books, allowing stories such as Saint Paul's conversion to travel across Europe well before large oil paintings could.

I focus on how volume is built only with black ink on light paper, using very fine cross-hatching for the chainmail, the horses manes and the rock grain. The contrast between the densely hatched dark sky and the beam of light falling vertically from the aureole of Christ structures the whole arched composition. It is a print that lets us see the Siena workshop approach at the end of the 15th century to create movement and drama without color.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What catches me most is light as the main character, that beam coming down from the circle of cherubs and rays where Christ appears to the fallen man lying on his back in the lower center. The dark sky is filled with small white marks that look like stars or radiance, and all the turmoil of soldiers covering their eyes and rearing horses happens under that glow. It reminds me how an intense light can dazzle and stop an entire group on the road.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like everyone fell at the same time as if a super beam of light knocked them over, horses are jumping and soldiers with helmets and round shields cover their eyes. In the middle there is a man in armor lying on his back with open arms, and another tries to help him. Up in the dark sky Christ is inside a circle of little angels and rays sending the light, and behind you can see a walled city with towers among trees and rocks. There is so much movement.
