woodcut
What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal black-and-white woodcut showing a crowded, chaotic knightly tournament. At the center of the narrow arena, enclosed by wooden tilt barriers, two mounted knights have just collided: their lances have shattered into flying splinters and one horse appears to stumble. Around them, a dense mass of armored knights with plumed helms and caparisoned horses watches or awaits its turn; some hold lances aloft, others adjust reins. In the foreground, several foot attendants rush in to collect broken shafts. In the background, on a raised gallery with a parapet, a tightly packed audience of ladies and lords in elaborate headdresses and hats looks on with animated gestures. On the right, set against the palisade, a small inset scene shows a bearded man wrestling a lion, Samson. The linework is energetic, with dense cross-hatching and heavy shading that renders the texture of metal, fabric and horsehair, creating a strong sense of motion and tumult across the entire composition.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start at the central burst of splintered lances and follow the swirl of horses and plumes filling the arena. Then lift your gaze to the crowded gallery and find, almost hidden on the right, the small struggle of Samson and the lion that gives the print its title and shifts it from festive chronicle to allegory.
ContextContexto
This work is recorded as a woodcut by German artist Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472–1553), dated 1509 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Cranach was court painter to the Electors of Saxony and a leading printmaker of the German Renaissance, a contemporary of Dürer. Tournament prints were a popular genre celebrating courtly festivals and martial skill. The vignette of Samson wrestling the lion, seen at the upper right, likely alludes to the biblical theme of strength, connected to heraldry or to the tournament's name. No further specific information is given in the source data.

Cranach signed this print with his winged serpent monogram, visible on the wall at right, his personal emblem adopted in 1508 after receiving a coat of arms from Elector Frederick the Wise.

What draws me here is the woodwork. This black-and-white woodcut lives through crosshatched lines, dense shading and splinters flying in the air. Look at the tumult of the arena, the wooden barriers, the metals, fabrics and manes built with nervous strokes. It is from 1509 and you have to imagine the wear on the block with so much detail. The contrast between deep black and light paper holds all the energy of the clash and the movement.

I see this print like a sky crowded with constellations in motion. The horizontal tournament is a narrow orbit where two knights collide like stars and their lances burst into bright splinters. Around them gravitates a compact crowd of plumed helmets and horses with ornamental caparisons, while on the raised grandstand the public watches as if from an observatory. On the right, the vignette of Samson with the lion is like a starry myth that gives the festival its name.

Everything is a jumble of horses! Two knights crashed in the middle and their lances broke into little pieces flying everywhere. There are so many horses with pretty capes and men with feathered helmets waiting for their turn. Below, some pages run to pick up the pieces. Up on a grandstand, many ladies and gentlemen watch and make lively gestures. And on the right, hidden on the fence, there is a bearded man hugging a lion, it is Samson! I love finding him.
Me gusta buscarlo.
