What you would seeLo que verías

The piece fills almost the entire frame, shown straight-on and centered against a plain, light-gray background, with no other object to provide a sense of scale. It is a terracotta plaque with a semicircular top and a straight base, shaped like a small headstone or the end of a roof tile. Its surface is rough, grainy and worn, in grayish brown tones with pink and reddish traces of pigment. In relief is a bearded male face looking directly at the viewer. It has large, almond-shaped eyes with no marked pupils, barely suggested brows and several horizontal wrinkles across the forehead. The nose is broad and snub, with a rounded tip; the small, closed mouth has thick lips beneath a thin mustache. A long, pointed beard, worked with irregular vertical incisions, covers the chin and cheeks and reaches the lower edge. Long locks of hair fall on both sides, rendered as a grid of small rectangles where more of the reddish color survives. Across the forehead runs a row of short curls, and beside the temples are long, drooping, animal-like ears. Soft frontal light casts a faint shadow beneath the plaque and brings out every incision and pore in the clay.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the eyes: their almond shape and lack of pupils make the gaze feel both present and distant. Then move to the sides of the face and look for the long, drooping, animal-like ears that reveal this is not an ordinary man. Finally, compare the finely incised beard with the regular grid of the hair, where the surviving reddish color is easiest to see.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this terracotta as an antefix with a satyr's face, made by an unknown artist around 525–480 BCE and associated with the Greek/South Italian culture of Taranto. An antefix capped the open end of a roof tile, helping to keep wind, water and pests out of the building below. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this example was mold-made, finished with pigment and possibly with stamped or carved details, and would have formed part of a long row of faces high above viewers. It is not known which specific building it came from.

Curious detailDato curioso

What now looks like plain stone-colored clay was once more colorful: faint pink and reddish traces survive especially in the gridded hair, a reminder that many ancient terracottas were painted.

I focus on the surface of this brownish gray terracotta with remaining pinkish and reddish pigment. I see a semicircular plaque made with a mold, with the bearded face of a satyr in relief looking straight ahead. I am drawn to the vertical incisions of the pointed beard, the grid-like locks on the sides and the row of curls across the forehead. The reddish pigment that survives tells me a lot about the original finish and about how time has worn the porous clay.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I imagine this piece not in a display case but up high, on the edge of a roof in Taranto around 525-480 B.C., as part of a long row of faces. As an antefix it covered the end of a roof tile to keep out wind, water and small animals. From that height its watchful gaze, with large almond-shaped eyes, would have overlooked the sky and the street. I like to think it protected the building like a guardian constellation lined up along the rooftop.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little face staring at you from a roof tile. It has a long beard with little lines, a tiny mustache and a closed mouth, and on the sides its hair looks like a net with reddish squares. On top it has lots of little curls and long ears like a small animal hanging down. It feels all rough and it is gray with pink spots. I picture many matching little faces lined up on the roof of an old house, making sure wind and little birds do not get inside.
