What you would seeLo que verías
The piece is shown horizontally, very long and narrow, photographed straight-on against a pale gray, almost white background, with empty space above and below. It is a long strip of tanned hide covered almost entirely by thousands of tiny, shiny beads set in tight rows. The dominant ground is ivory white, dotted with widely spaced specks of red and dark blue. At regular intervals are four large circular medallions that project slightly below the lower edge of the strip. Each carries a cross within a circle: triangular arms in wine red and indigo blue, separated by white lines and enclosed by a dark ring with red accents. Between the medallions are narrow vertical bands with geometric motifs: mustard-yellow diamonds on blue, red stripes, and columns of diamonds. The ends repeat yellow and blue diamonds. Beneath three medallions hang thin, pale leather cords, knotted, forming irregular loops that fall over the background and cast soft shadows. The light is even and diffuse; the grainy relief of the beads contrasts with the matte hide of the cords and the small folds at the ends.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the strip as a whole to perceive its rhythm, then move in close to one medallion and compare it with the next. Notice how the white ground makes the reds, blues, and yellows vibrate, and how the hanging leather ties break the strict geometry.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this blanket strip, by an unknown maker, dates to around 1900 and belongs to the Tsitsistas (Cheyenne) culture of the North American Plains. It is made of Native-tanned hide, glass and brass beads, yellow trade cloth, and sinew thread. The source notes that animal-hide robes basic to Plains attire were often ornamented with quilled or beaded strips, also stitched to the blankets that replaced robes. Its central motif symbolizes the world, the four directions, and the sacred center. Its individual maker and specific history of use are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual observation: despite its almost industrial regularity from a distance, up close each row of beads has tiny variations in alignment and shine, revealing the handwork behind the geometric order.

I focus on what it takes to keep this strip alive. It is hide tanned with Indigenous methods, covered with thousands of glass and brass beads sewn with sinew thread, plus touches of commercial yellow cloth. The ivory background is pristine, dotted with spaced red and dark blue points, and four medallions that extend beyond the edge. Between them are bands with mustard diamonds on blue and rows of diamond shapes. I see the grainy relief of the beadwork and the pale leather laces hanging below, casting soft shadows.

When I look at this long narrow strip I think of a sky map. The four circular medallions with a cross inside remind me of how we mark the four directions and a sacred center, which the museum says symbolizes the world for the Tsitsistas people. Each cross with triangular arms in wine red and indigo blue, surrounded by a dark ring, feels like a compass. Between medallions the bands with yellow diamonds and red stripes set a rhythm, like constellations repeating across the strip.

It looks like a super shiny extra-long caterpillar lying down! It is covered in tiny white beads with little red and blue dots, and it has four big circles that poke out a little at the bottom like wheels. Inside each circle there is a red and blue cross. Between the circles there are patterns with yellow diamonds and little stripes. From three circles hang light-colored leather strings with knots and soft shadows. I like to count and see how everything repeats the same way.
