What you would seeLo que verías

On warm ivory paper with a visible woven texture and slightly deckled, uneven edges, a jockey seen from behind rides a horse in right-facing profile at the center. The drawing is executed in black charcoal with expressive, smudged strokes and soft blending. In the foreground, the horse's hindquarters and hind legs dominate the lower area; muscles are modeled with dense shading that darkens at the hocks and hooves. Its back arches while the forelegs are lifted off the ground, caught mid-trot or in a slight rear. Details include a short tail, a bristly mane, and a head turned in three-quarter view with an open muzzle, jaw straining against the bit and bridle suggested by thin lines. The jockey wears a cap, a light jacket cinched at the waist, and riding breeches; his back is softly shaded and his right leg grips the horse's flank. Light appears to come from the left, creating a strong contrast between the dark charcoal and the empty background without landscape. A small red signature sits at the lower left. The image conveys suspended motion and contained energy, like a fleeting moment of training.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dark silhouette of the horse against the pale paper, then trace the line from the hindquarters along the arched back to the tense head. Notice how charcoal shifts from loose smudge to precise line at the hooves and bit. Observe the empty space around the figures and how it heightens the sense of a frozen instant.

ContextContexto

Work by Edgar Degas (French, 1834–1917), dated circa 1885–1900, France, 19th century. Medium: charcoal on paper. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a study for a larger racetrack composition in pastel, in which Degas lavished attention on perfecting the positions of the horse's legs, hoofs, jaw straining against the bit, and the swish of the tail. Degas, associated with Impressionism, was deeply interested in drawing movement, racehorses, and modern life in Paris. The sheet belongs to the Drawings department and was a Gift of The Print Club of Cleveland. The identity of the jockey is not recorded and was likely an anonymous studio model.

Curious detailDato curioso

Degas frequently visited racetracks and produced dozens of horse studies across media, using charcoal to rehearse poses and anatomy in motion before developing them into finished pastels or paintings.

  1. What sense of movement emerges from the contrast between grounded hind legs and lifted forelegs?¿Qué sensación de movimiento te da el contraste entre las patas traseras apoyadas y las delanteras en el aire?
  2. How does the faceless, back-turned jockey change your focus compared to the horse's expressive head?¿Cómo cambia tu lectura al ver al jinete de espaldas, sin rostro, frente a un caballo con tanta expresión?
  3. What does the blank background suggest about whether this is a portrait or an exercise in observation?¿Qué te dice el fondo vacío sobre si esto es un retrato o un ejercicio de observación?

I start with the material itself, that warm ivory paper almost beige with irregular edges and a visible woven texture that lets the charcoal breathe. The black is intense on the hooves and hocks but softens into a smudge on the jockey's back to shape the light coming from the left. That short tail, the bristling mane and the jaw pulling against the bit show how Degas tested movement before committing it to pastel. And below, that small red signature, fragile yet vivid, reminds us how delicate its survival is.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this drawing as the record of a brief orbit. The horse in profile to the right seems suspended mid-trot, front legs lifted and hindquarters anchored below, like a planet at perihelion holding energy. Between 1885 and 1900 Degas studied here the mechanics of motion, the position of hooves, hocks and the jaw pulling on the bit, just as we chart trajectories. With no landscape, on the empty beige void, only the jockey seen from behind with his cap and the animal remain, pure vectors of force and light.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This horse looks like it is about to gallop right off the paper! You see it sideways to the right and the rider from behind with his little cap on, holding on tight. I like how the black pencil is super dark on the back legs and lighter on the rider's back, like sunshine is coming from the left. It has a short tail and its mouth is open because it is pulling the bridle. There are no houses or trees, just the two of them on cookie-colored paper with a tiny red signature in the corner.
