What you would seeLo que verías

On the right side of the print, a dark horse rearing up dominates the composition. Draped over its back is a pale-clothed human figure arching backward, head thrown back and both arms raised toward a black sky, as if about to fall. The horse grips the figure’s clothing in its teeth near the chest, its front legs lifted off the ground and hind legs straining against a dark, hatched ground line. On the left foreground, emerging from shadow, is a large grotesque beast with a shaggy head, wide-open snout, glaring eyes and visible fangs, watching the pair. The background is a night sky rendered in aquatint, deepest black at the top fading to pale gray near the low horizon. Light from below catches the folds of the garments, the tangled hair of the fallen figure and the rough coat of the horse. Energetic etched lines and stark contrasts of black, charcoal and off-white create a sense of violent motion and nightmarish tension, with small details like the figure’s shoes and the beast’s whiskers visible on close looking.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the diagonal of the falling body and its upstretched arms, then notice how the horse holds the figure by cloth alone. Let your eye drop to the monstrous head on the left: its gaze turns a simple fall into a scene of abduction and dread.

ContextContexto

Source data identifies this as The Horse-Abductor, from The Proverbs also known as Los Disparates, by Francisco de Goya (1746–1828), made as an etching and aquatint. The date 1864 refers to the first posthumous edition printed by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid; Goya created the plates around 1815–1824 but they were not published during his lifetime. The series includes 22 prints known for dreamlike, satirical and dark imagery. This plate is traditionally numbered 10 and called the Horse Abductor. Its precise intended meaning is not known, and scholars believe it probably blends popular sayings, social critique and fantasy.

Curious detailDato curioso

Goya etched the Disparates in his late years, but the plates were not printed until 1864, more than three decades after his death, making this impression one of the earliest existing pulls of the image.

I focus on how Goya created such a deep night without using a flat black ink. I see the sky gradient made with aquatint, darker at the top and lighter toward the horizon, and the nervous etching line in the bristling fur and in the folds of the light clothing. It moves me that this print belongs to the series Los Proverbios, etched between 1815 and 1824 but only published in 1864, and how the light from below reveals every hatched mark on the dark ground.

For me this night sky is the real protagonist. There are no stars or moon, just a gradient going from intense black to pale gray at the horizon, like an eclipse or a dawn that never comes. That emptiness makes the rearing horse and the figure arching backward seem suspended in the cosmos. In his Disparates, Goya paints a nightmare night where darkness is not a background but a force that watches along with the creature with the open snout.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This horse looks so scared and angry! It stands on two legs and bites the clothes of the person falling backward with arms up to the sky, like in a movie. The big furry head on the left with the open snout and fangs scares me a little, it looks like a monster that is waiting. Everything is in black and white and gray, and the light makes the clothes and hair look super bright at night.
