etching and aquatint
What you would seeLo que verías
The nocturnal scene fills the plate with a stark play of light and deep shadow. On the left foreground, a colossal, ghostly figure towers over everything: a massive bulk draped in heavy, tattered white cloth that falls in stiff, vertical folds, with a dark hollow near the top suggesting an empty mouth or eye socket. Its texture is coarsely hatched with etching, while the background sky is rendered with grainy aquatint that feels like dusty night. On the flat, dark ground at center and right, a group of soldiers collapses in terror. Two lie sprawled on their backs in detailed uniforms with sabers nearby, faces contorted. A third man crawls backward staring at the apparition, while a fourth stands slightly apart, raising a curved saber with a frantic, almost hysterical grin, mouth open. Behind them, more tiny figures flee in disorder toward a slender, twisted tree with a gnarled trunk and thin, sketchily etched foliage that stands isolated against the speckled, starry darkness. The light seems to rise from below, bleaching the phantom's drapery and leaving the surrounding night velvety and dense, emphasizing the absurd scale difference between the phantom and the humans.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the huge pale phantom on the left and follow its vertical mass down to the fallen soldiers to feel the disproportion. Notice the dark gap in the drapery that reads as a face, and then see how the lone twisted tree on the right balances the composition.
ContextContexto
This print belongs to the series known as Los Proverbios or Los Disparates, etched by Spanish artist Francisco de Goya between about 1815 and 1824, though this impression was printed posthumously in 1864, the date recorded by the museum. Made with etching and aquatint, the series explores absurdity, fear and superstition through dreamlike, satirical images. The traditional title points to the folly of collective fear before what is probably a simple cloth phantom, perhaps propped up as a trick. The exact meaning Goya intended for each plate is not documented, and titles were assigned later by others.

I focus on how the night itself is made. Goya worked this print in etching and aquatint between 1815 and 1824, although it was printed posthumously in 1864. That velvety, granular black background is not flat ink, it is aquatint creating dust and deep darkness. Look at the contrast: the giant cloth ghost is pale, rough and hatched, almost white, and it makes the fallen soldiers on the dark flat ground look even more vulnerable. The light coming from below sculpts the heavy folds of the mantle.

That sky captivates me. It is a starry night sky made with granular aquatint, not real stars, but it captures that feeling of a pitch-black night I know well. The twisted tree with its thin trunk stands out against that speckled vault. And below, the dark flat ground feels like a plain with no horizon. The giant cloth ghost dominates because it is colossal compared to the humans, and its dark mouth looks like an eclipse. It is fear of the unknown projected onto the night.

It looks like a ghost made with a giant bedsheet, like when you play at scaring people. It has white cloths hanging down and a big black mouth, and it is much taller than everyone else. The soldiers are lying on the floor, looking terrified, and one is shouting with a curved saber in his hand. Others run away toward the skinny tree. It makes me laugh and feel a little scared at the same time, because maybe it is just a cloth and everyone got scared for no reason, as the title about the folly of fear says.
