The sheet has an unusual L shape and sits against a dark gray background that fills most of the image, especially the upper right. Only a tall vertical strip on the left and a short horizontal strip along the bottom are covered by off-white, slightly aged paper. On that narrow support, a climbing or leaning plant rises beside a dark vertical post or trunk on the far left, bends at the bottom corner, and continues a short distance to the right. The drawing is done in wash, in blacks, grays, and diluted whites that let the paper show through. Thin, thorny stems twist upward, bearing oval leaves, buds, and several open, pale flowers with loosely indicated centers. Some blossoms are recognizable; others dissolve into stains and quick strokes. The light feels diffuse, without harsh shadows, and the modeling comes from the density of the wash: almost black in the trunk and certain stems, nearly transparent in petals and background. There are visible drips, dragged washes, fine lines, cropped edges, and a small notch in the horizontal section. The scale is intimate, like a page cut out for a border or corner, and the large empty area makes the fragile plant seem isolated and quiet.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the plant from the bottom right to the top, noticing how the stem hugs the corner. Then look at the irregular edge of the paper and the large dark gray void: the missing area is also part of the experience. Finally, move closer to the washes, where some flowers are barely suggested.

ContextContexto

Flower Study is a drawing in wash by Harry Fenn (American, 1838/45–1911), dated only broadly to c. 1857–1911, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art, which holds it as a gift of Rossiter Howard. The source provides no description and does not identify the plant species, the place where it was made, or its intended purpose. It was probably an observational study, a common exercise for exploring light, growth, and botanical forms before a more finished work, although that is not confirmed. The wide date range invites us to view it as a working sheet rather than a closed, definitive image.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual fact: the drawing's L shape creates two frames at once, the cut paper and, inside it, the bent plant that repeats the same corner.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why do you think the paper was cut into an L shape, and how does that shape change your reading of the plant?¿Por qué crees que el papel se recortó en forma de L y cómo cambia esa forma tu lectura de la planta?
  2. Which flowers seem finished to you and which are left as stains, and what effect does that contrast create?¿Qué flores te parecen terminadas y cuáles quedan como manchas, y qué efecto produce ese contraste?
  3. If you could complete the empty space, would you leave it blank or extend the scene, and why?

I focus on the support because it is part of the drawing itself. We see a pale bone-white paper cut into an L shape, with a small notch on the horizontal arm, placed against a dark gray background that dominates the image. I notice how Harry Fenn handles wash: ink that is almost black on the post and on some thorny stems, mid grays on the oval leaves, and almost transparent glazes on the open light flowers. There are drips, water drags and cut edges that show this is a fragile, intimate working sheet, perhaps intended for a border design.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this negative space as a night sky. The large dark gray background fills mostly the upper right quadrant and makes the L-shaped strip look like a narrow constellation. The climbing plant grows beside the dark post on the left, bends at the corner and continues to the right, like an orbit. Its thin thorny stems, oval leaves and pale open flowers with a soft center are points of light that are recognizable and then dissolve into quick washes. Volume does not come from hard shadows, but from ink density, like brightness that gathers and fades.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the little plant is all alone in its corner. The paper is L-shaped, as if someone cut out a border, and behind it everything is dark gray, a lot of empty space. On the left there is a dark little stick that is like its house, and from there thin stems with tiny prickles twist upward, with oval leaves and little white flowers and buds about to open. Some flowers look very pale and others are just smudges. I like how it bends at the little corner and goes a bit to the right, as if it were exploring carefully and quietly.
