What you would seeLo que verías
The horizontal watercolor shows a group of gulls in full commotion over churning water. Six birds are readily visible and another is cut off at the right edge. In the center right, the largest gull dominates with wings raised almost vertically, its white body modeled in gray and blue, black wingtips, a dark tail, and legs dangling as it descends. At upper center another gull flies toward the viewer; at left, one lifts a long wing diagonally; below right, two more bend their necks toward the foam, searching for food. Short, loose, transparent brushstrokes build feathers without precise outlines. The sea fills nearly the whole sheet with waves in white, turquoise, green, deep blue, and gray, slanted in diagonals that echo the wings. Among the foam appear brown and reddish-brown masses, probably rocks or shadowed water, with a small touch of rose near the center. In the background, a strip of distant blue hills and a cloudy sky in beige, gray, and pale blue closes the scene. The paper shows an irregular edge and a visible grain. Light is diffuse, as on an overcast day, and the overall scale feels close and immersive, as if the viewer stood amid the flock. A small reddish signature is visible at lower right.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the largest gull at center right, wings raised, and follow the direction of its beak down toward the water. Then look for the birds at the edges, especially the one cut off at the right, which makes the flock feel larger than the sheet. Notice how the waves and wings share the same diagonal rhythms.
ContextContexto
Gulls Feeding (1927–1928) is a watercolor by Henry Keller (1869–1949), an American artist born in Germany, catalogued by the Cleveland Museum of Art within its Drawings department, with a cultural association to Cleveland, Ohio. The museum credits its acquisition to a purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund. The source gives no description of the scene and does not identify the exact place represented; it was probably a stretch of coast or lakeshore observed from life, but that is not documented. Watercolor, quick and transparent, suits a fleeting subject of birds in motion over water.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual detail: the gull at the far right is cut off by the edge of the paper, with only part of its body visible, as if it had entered the scene too fast to be framed.

I pause on how the paper breathes beneath the water: you can see the grain and the uneven edge of the sheet letting light through. The brushstrokes are short, transparent and without firm outline, and with that the white plumage is modeled using grays and blues. Look at the gull in the center right with wings almost vertical and black wingtips; the pigment is heavier there. At the lower right there is a small reddish signature that we must protect from direct light so it does not fade.

This watercolor reminds me of watching a turbulent patch of sky, but here the sky is the sea. Almost the whole sheet is filled with waves in diagonals of white, turquoise, green and intense blue that echo the angle of the wings. In the background there is a band of distant blue hills under a cloudy sky of beige and pale blue, a very soft horizon line. The light is diffuse, an overcast day with no hard shadows, like when clouds filter everything and the whites of the water and the birds almost blend together.

It looks like the gulls are playing tag over the bouncy water! I count six full gulls and one more cut off at the right edge, as if it slipped out of the photo. My favorite is the big one in the center with wings lifted like a giant W and little legs dangling. At the lower right two bend their necks toward the foam because they are looking for food. Everything looks wiggly, with lots of little colored streaks, and in the back you can see tiny blue hills under a fluffy cloudy sky.
