What you would seeLo que verías
The composition is a coastal landscape tilted on a diagonal, running from the rocky foreground at lower right toward a headland receding to the left. More than half the sheet is filled with angular cliffs painted in translucent patches of gray, pinkish brown, rust, and violet. Their flat faces, scored by dark lines and short strokes, convey fractured, eroded stone. At the lower left a band of pale rock cuts across the scene, and beneath it the agitated water is rendered with dense touches of navy blue, black, and the white of unpainted paper. On the left, the sea is a smoother surface of pale gray-green, with a small patch of white foam beside the rocks. Above the cliffs, the upper slope bursts into pinks, reds, oranges, magentas, and purples, with green and blue dots and dashes that suggest autumn vegetation rather than describe it. At the top, silhouetted against a nearly empty cream sky, stands the compact, dark gray shape of a building. The grainy texture of the paper shows through across the whole surface and lends roughness to the stone.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the pale, nearly empty sea and sky on the left, then follow the diagonal of the cliffs toward the right. Notice how the rocks are built from flat planes and dark cuts, while the hillside above them dissolves into dots of color. That contrast between hard stone and fleeting vegetation is what gives November its chill.
ContextContexto
Cliffs, November is a watercolor from 1926–27 by Charles Sydney Hopkinson (American, 1869–1962), catalogued as a drawing by the Cleveland Museum of Art, which credits its acquisition to a purchase from the J. H. Wade Fund. The source does not identify the coastal site, so its exact location is not known. The title points to late autumn, a season the artist suggests less through bare trees than through the reddened, broken color of the hillside vegetation. Executed in watercolor, a medium well suited to working quickly with transparent washes, it probably records a direct encounter with the landscape, though that cannot be confirmed from the available information.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual detail: the most intense colors are not in the sea, but on land — pinks, magentas, and oranges flare across the upper slope like autumn foliage seen in low light.

I linger on how the paper does part of the work: untouched white becomes foam and light among the dark blues, and the grainy texture shows through the washes and makes the stone feel rough. I see translucent patches of gray, pinkish brown, rust and violet building flat, broken rock faces with dark lines and short brushstrokes. Up top, the November vegetation is not drawn leaf by leaf but with dots and streaks of pink, red, orange and magenta vibrating against the creamy sky.

This almost empty cream sky makes me think of a cloudy November dusk, when light no longer casts sharp shadows. That compact dark gray building silhouetted at the top looks like a lighthouse or a house facing the sea, tiny against the angular cliffs that fill more than half the sheet. The diagonal tilt of the coast reminds me of looking at a horizon from above, as if the viewpoint were floating over the pale gray-green water and the pale rock band at the corner.

The rocks look like they are made of puzzle pieces! They are gray, brown and purple with lots of little black lines. The sea on the left is light green and calm, but down below it is navy blue with white that looks like splashing. What I like most is the top part because it looks like pink, red and orange confetti tossed over the cliffs. Right at the very top there is a tiny gray house all alone looking at the cream-colored sky.
