What you would seeLo que verías

An elongated, horizontal textile fragment with irregular, frayed edges that ripple along the top and bottom, suggesting it was cut or torn from a larger garment. In the foreground, two decorative bands are stacked vertically. The upper, broader band features a repeating sequence of teardrop or stylized palmette motifs set against a vivid, slightly faded red ground; each motif is outlined in cream and topped with a small circular loop, alternating in palette — ochre, tan, olive green, black — with some retaining inner foliate details in reddish and golden tones. The weave is dense and slightly fuzzy, wool tapestry on a linen ground, with a granular, hand-woven texture. Below it, a narrower border in deep petrol blue, almost black, displays a row of mustard-yellow and off-white dots separated by a fine dotted line. The neutral linen backing and even lighting reveal age: loose threads, discolored patches, and small gaps where warp is missing. The contrast between the vibrant red and the dark blue dominates, while the beige field appears pale and worn, emphasizing the fragment’s antiquity and delicate, abraded surface.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start by scanning the upper red band and counting the teardrop motifs, noticing how each one differs in color and state of preservation. Then move down to the blue dotted border and observe its geometric regularity against the more organic shapes above. Consider the broken edges to imagine how this narrow strip once framed a neckline.

ContextContexto

According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a fragment of a tunic neck band by an unknown maker, dated to the 400s–600s, from Egypt during the Byzantine period. The technique is tapestry originally inwoven in a tabby ground, using wool and linen. Such ornamental bands were typical of Late Antique and Coptic tunics, where tapestry weaving allowed colorful, durable motifs to be integrated directly into the garment. The palette and stylized vegetal motifs are characteristic of Egyptian textile production at that time. No specific information is available about its findspot or original owner.

Curious detailDato curioso

In Byzantine Egypt, linen provided the strong, plain ground of the tunic while dyed wool created the intense colors of tapestry ornament, a technical pairing that defines Coptic textiles and still helps identify fragment origins today.

Look at how wear tells the story of this neckband. The frayed, wavy edges on top and bottom show it was torn from a larger tunic, and the small gaps reveal the pale linen ground beneath the wool. I love the tapestry over tabby technique, because that dense, fuzzy weave let the intense red and the almost black petrol blue stay vibrant after fifteen centuries. Notice the loose threads and how the beige has faded, that is time itself working on wool and linen fibers.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

To me these teardrop palmettes look like constellations against a red sky. Each one is outlined in cream and topped by a tiny circular loop, like a small sun or planet. I like to count them: they alternate ochre, beige, olive green and black, with inner foliage in reddish and golden tones. Below, the petrol blue band with mustard yellow and off-white dots looks like a starry night strip. It is a fragment from Byzantine Egypt from the 5th to 6th century, but its rhythm of color and repetition reminds me of gazing at an ordered sky.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a border of upside-down little ice creams. The top part is red with colorful droplet shapes like popsicles, some ochre, some green and black, all with a little cream border and a tiny hole on top as if to hang them. Below there is a very dark blue stripe with yellow dots like polka dots. It looks a bit torn and with loose threads because it is super old, from clothes in Egypt many, many years ago. I like it because even though it is broken its colors are still really bright, especially the red.

  1. #1

If you count the two decorative bands seen in the foreground, what are the main colors of their backgrounds?

    HintPista

Look for the wide band on top and the narrow one below, one is warm and vibrant and the other is dark as night.

  2. #2

What shape are the repeated motifs on the red background and what circular detail crowns them?

    HintPista

They look like little leaves or droplets outlined in cream, each with a tiny ring on top.

  3. #3

Besides red and blue, name two colors that alternate in the palmettes of the upper band.

    HintPista

Notice the fill of each droplet, they are not all the same, some are light and some dark.
