A small vertical woodcut in black ink on grayish, slightly textured paper. At the top, within a narrow band, the German inscription “Der Bapst.” identifies the Pope. On the left, beneath heavy curtains and an ornate canopy, the Pope sits on a carved throne decorated with grotesque creatures. He wears a tall papal tiara and voluminous robes drawn with dense parallel lines. Leaning forward, he holds a crown with both hands over a kneeling man in a broad cloak, who bows low and appears to kiss the Pope’s foot; a small orb rests on the floor beside him. Immediately behind the Pope, a grinning skull with scraps of flesh emerges between the curtains. On the right stand a bishop in a mitre, a cardinal in a wide hat holding a staff, and a skeletal Death dressed as a pilgrim, wearing a broad-brimmed hat and carrying a cross and a long staff. Above them, a demon flies in holding a document, while another horned, dragon-like demon lunges from the upper left. The space is crowded, the blacks are stark, and the fine hatching gives weight to cloth, bone, and skin.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two enthroned and kneeling figures on the left, then look for the skeleton standing directly behind the Pope. After that, scan the upper corners: the small demons change a court ceremony into a scene already invaded by death.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why does Death first appear as a skull peeking from behind the curtain rather than confronting the Pope openly?¿Por qué la Muerte aparece primero como una calavera que espía tras la cortina y no enfrentando abiertamente al papa?
  2. What does the image criticize: death itself, religious power, or the ceremony of submission in the foreground?¿Qué critica la imagen: la muerte misma, el poder religioso o la ceremonia de sumisión del primer plano?
  3. How does the scene change if we read it today, outside its sixteenth-century religious context?¿Cómo cambia la escena si la leemos hoy, fuera de su contexto religioso del siglo XVI?

The conservatorLa restauradora

From my work table the first thing I notice is the greyish porous paper and how the black ink sinks into it. The very dense parallel hatching dresses the pope and gives weight to the canopy and the throne carved with grotesque creatures. I worry about the upper band with the inscription Der Bapst, so exposed to handling. I also observe the contrast between solid blacks and reserved whites that shape bones, fabrics and skin with admirable economy for such a small woodcut.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this woodcut like a crowded night sky. Above, two demons cross like dark comets, one holding a document and another horned one swooping down. Below, the pope's throne is like a system with orbits: the kneeling emperor, the bishop with a mitre and the broad-hatted cardinal circle around him. Death as a pilgrim, with her wide brimmed hat and staff, is the eclipse that interrupts everything and reminds us that no power lasts forever.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The man with the tall hat is sitting on a fancy chair with curtains behind him. He wears a very big hat and is placing a little crown on another man who is kneeling and looks like he is kissing his foot. Behind them a skull peeks out laughing between the curtains! To one side there are more men with funny hats and a skeleton with a traveler hat and a long stick. Up above two little monsters fly and everything is full of tiny black lines.
