What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical black-and-white lithograph on cream paper, with wide pale margins. At lower left is written “1/25” and at lower right “Richard R. Beatty ’29.” The image is made of dense, grainy black marks, soft smudges, and rough waxy-crayon lines, with very few clean whites. In the foreground, a large, almost empty pale shape spreads across the lower right, like a bare floor lit from above; its smoothness contrasts with the darkness surrounding it. Around its edges, elongated human figures crowd, bend, and collapse. At center left, a figure throws both arms upward, head tilted back and one hand near the face of a person behind. To the left, part of a bed or railed structure cuts into the scene. On the right, two seated figures slump forward with bowed heads and heavy limbs, hands resting in their laps. At lower left another figure leans inward, and at the bottom center only the backs of heads and small raised hands are visible, as if seen from an audience or from within a crowd. In the background are horizontal wooden boards and a ladder-like form rising at upper right. Faces are shadowed or unfinished, gestures are exaggerated, and the cramped interior feels tilted, smoky, and unstable. No clear horizon or exit is visible.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large pale expanse in the foreground: its emptiness forces your eye toward the dark figures pressed around it. Then follow the raised arms at center left and contrast them with the bowed heads on the right. Notice how almost no face is fully visible, so the story is told through posture rather than expression.

ContextContexto

Richard Beatty (1899–1961), an American artist from Cleveland, Ohio, made this lithograph in 1929. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, he taught himself lithography at night and portrayed theater and cabaret scenes with dense, expressive lines drawn with a waxy crayon. His skill led to his hiring, around 1933, as an instructor when Karamu formed a graphic arts program. Beatty said this was his favorite print and made it after seeing the play Porgy at the Ohio Theatre. Its elongated, slumped figures evoke the emotional climax, in which a man tries to rescue the woman he loves from her violent partner. The production had an all-Black cast, unusual for the time, and opened to great acclaim in Cleveland in 1929.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on how this lithograph was made on cream paper. Beatty taught himself to work the greasy crayon on the stone at night, and you can see it in the grainy smudges, the dense blacks and the off-white reserves he left. There is very little clean white, almost everything is rough texture and soot. I am struck by the contrast between the large pale plane of the floor at the bottom and the packed darkness of the bodies around it. The elongated figures look quickly drawn, with exaggerated gestures, and the wide margins let that crowded scene breathe.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This looks like a night sky seen without a telescope, where the large pale void at the bottom is like a full moon lighting everything from above. Around it, the dark figures are human constellations bending and collapsing toward that light. At the center left, a figure with raised arms seems to call to the stars, while others hunch over like heavy planets. The planks in the back and the staircase climbing to the right are like the horizon of a tilted observatory, with no exit, where everything spins around that central glow.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I feel like I am watching the play from down low, among little heads and tiny hands raised up, as if I were in the audience. Everything looks dark and crowded, with skinny people bending and falling over. The big light floor at the bottom shines a lot compared to all the black around it. On the left a person lifts both arms very high and seems to shout, and on the right two people sit with their heads down looking very sad. You cannot see a door or window, only wooden boards and a small staircase.
