What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows the reverse of an ancient silver coin, photographed from directly above against a plain light background. The coin is roughly circular with an uneven, worn and chipped rim, filling most of the frame. Its surface is textured and granular, with soft matte silver tones, darker gray in recesses and brighter highlights on raised areas where light catches the metal. At the center is a crisp incuse square formed by a double raised border, enclosing a stylized grapevine. A short trunk rises vertically and branches into delicate, slightly twisting stems that extend diagonally, terminating in four clearly modeled bunches of grapes with individual berries and small leaves. Surrounding this inner square, a fainter larger square holds a Greek inscription in block capitals: MEN at the top, Z on the left, OII at the bottom and ΔA on the right, spelling MENDAION, meaning of the Mendeans. The letters are thick, geometric and slightly irregular from hand striking. Lateral lighting emphasizes relief, tiny pits, scratches and the hammered edge of the flan, conveying age and handling.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the inner square and trace the vine from trunk to branches and grape bunches to see the balanced design. Then move outward to the surrounding letters and notice how text frames image. Finally look at the rough rim and surface wear that reveal centuries of circulation.

ContextContexto

This is the reverse of a silver tetradrachm minted at Mende in Chalkidike, northern Greece, around 430 BCE, now in the Greek and Roman Art department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The grapevine with clusters refers to Mendean wine, celebrated throughout the Aegean and a common civic badge on its coinage. The inscription MENDAION names the issuing city. The technique is hand-struck silver and the incuse square format is typical of Classical Greek coinage. The engraver is unknown, as is common for this period, and the source description provides no further detail.

Curious detailDato curioso

Mende was so renowned for its wine that vine and wine-jar imagery became its standard coin type and was recognized across the Aegean in the fifth century BCE.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the texture of this well-worn silver. The chipped edge, the tiny fissures and the grainy patina all speak of time. The double-lined incuse square protects the central vine and helped preserve the relief despite the hammer striking by hand. Notice how side light brings out the four grape clusters and the little tendrils with leaves, all struck manually on an irregular flan. It is a fragile, rough surface that shows its age in every pit and shadow.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What intrigues me most is that double square framing the vine, almost like an old viewfinder or sky map. At the center the plant spreads into diagonal, symmetrical branches, like a constellation. Around it, on the outer frame, the Greek letters spelling MENDAION act as cardinal points: MEN on top, Z on the left, OII at the bottom and ΔA on the right. It is an orderly design for a circular and irregular coin, where geometry tries to bring order to the chaos of hammered metal.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a tiny plant trapped in a shiny little box! It has a little trunk in the middle and four bunches of grapes hanging as if they might fall. The leaves are super small and the branches go zigzag. The coin is silvery gray, like a cookie nibbled at the edges because it is all chipped. Around the box there are funny little letters that make a secret code in Greek. I imagine if you touch it it goes ting and smells like very old grape juice.
