Linen and silk: tabby ground with inwoven tapestry ornament

What you would seeLo que verías

An irregular textile fragment is seen mounted on a smooth, muted taupe backing. The ground fabric is a fine linen in aged beige and ecru tones, with darker mottled staining from age and wear. The horizontal weft and vertical warp are clearly visible, especially in the paler lower areas and along the bottom edge, where loose white threads hang in an uneven, delicate fringe. Near the bottom, two thin parallel stripes in dark navy blue and mustard yellow run horizontally across the width, close to the edge. The most striking feature is a narrow tapestry-woven band that crosses the fragment just above center, extending almost from side to side. Woven in reddish-burgundy and brown threads on a light ground, it displays a row of angular Kufic letters, with tiny foliated flourishes tucked between some vertical strokes. The upper portion of the fragment is heavily damaged, with jagged missing areas, open holes, frayed fibers and translucent patches where the backing shows through, creating a rough, airy texture. Even, diffuse museum lighting highlights the contrast between the relatively solid, intact weave below the inscribed band and the fragile, almost lace-like deterioration above, revealing the textile's great age and physical vulnerability.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the burgundy Kufic band from one side to the other and notice the rhythm of its angular letters. Then move down to the two fine dark lines by the fringed hem and up to the tattered, translucent upper zones. See how the fragility of the worn linen sharpens the visual power of the small, firm inscription.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art data, this is a tiraz fragment from Egypt, Fatimid period, under the Caliphate of al-Zahir, dated 1027–36 (AH 418–427), 11th century. It is made of linen and silk in tabby ground with inwoven tapestry ornament. It bears a single narrow tapestry band with an inscription in simple Kufic that repeats the phrase «Dominion is God's», with small abbreviated floriated arabesques between letter shafts. Near the top, the plain linen ground is interrupted by narrow bands consisting of a few picks in dark blue and yellow silk, visible in the present fragment as double dark lines near the lower edge. Such inscribed textiles were probably part of ceremonial robes or shrouds and marked royal manufacture and blessing.

Curious detailDato curioso

Fatimid tiraz textiles were produced in state-controlled workshops called dar al-tiraz and were prized as symbols of sovereignty, often given as honorary robes; the woven inscription itself functioned as both decoration and official stamp.

When I look closely I see fragility first: a raw linen in aged beige with darker stains and holes at the top where it becomes almost translucent. The lower part holds better, you can see the warp and weft and even the loose fringe like an untidy little beard. What I care for most is the reddish horizontal band with burgundy Kufic letters and those two thin lines in dark blue and mustard near the edge. Everything speaks of wear, of time and of hands trying to preserve it.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

It reminds me of a layered sky. The pale cloth is like an old, worn atmosphere, with dense zones and others almost empty where the background void shows through. The reddish inscribed band is an orbit crossing the fragment, with angular letters like constellations and tiny foliated tips between them. And below, those two parallel lines in dark blue and mustard are like thin horizons. It makes me think about measuring time, not in light years but in centuries held by a textile.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little old broken blanket. The top is full of holes with fuzzy threads sticking out, the bottom looks stronger and has two little blue and yellow stripes like bracelets. In the middle there is a red band with pointy wine-colored letters I cannot read but they look pretty, with tiny little leaves. It makes me a bit sad because it is frayed with dangly fringe, but I also like imagining who wore it a very long time ago.
