What you would seeLo que verías

A long, irregular vertical textile fragment photographed against a plain white background. Its edges are frayed, torn and uneven, with small holes and loose threads, especially at the top and bottom, making clear that it is only part of a larger piece. The woven ground is an earthy, warm and slightly worn red, with subtle variations in tone and a fine, visible weave that looks faintly rough to the touch. Diagonal bands cross over this ground to form large diamonds. Each band has a dark outline and an interior filled with small stepped geometric motifs — triangles and tiny diamonds — in dark green, mustard yellow, cream and red. Where the bands intersect, there are oval green and yellow medallions with red inner shapes, like stylized petals or crosses. Inside each diamond, and also cut off along the side edges, symmetrical ornamental medallions repeat: a dark oval form with a reddish center, crowned by a small yellow flourish and flanked by scrolls and dots. Some are incomplete because the cloth was cut or lost. The composition is rhythmic and repetitive, with no recognizable human or animal figures, dominated by geometry, the contrast between the broad red field and the green and gold accents, and the tactile feeling of an old, fragile textile.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the diagonal bands and notice how they turn the surface into a chain of diamonds. Then look inside each diamond and at the edges, where the medallions are repeated and cut off. That interruption changes the reading: this is not a complete design, but a surviving piece of a much larger garment.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a fragmentary tunic ornament by an unknown maker, dated between the mid-700s and the mid-800s, from Egypt in the Abbasid period. It was made in tapestry weave with wool and linen, and is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of George D. Pratt. Its exact maker, workshop and place of production are not known. It probably formed part of the decoration of a garment; that helps explain why the pattern continues beyond the edges. Similar geometric ornament was common in early medieval textiles from the region.

Curious detailDato curioso

In tapestry weave the pattern is not printed or embroidered on top: it is built into the cloth itself as the colored weft threads are woven in.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. What might the complete tunic have looked like if this pattern continued across it?¿Cómo pudo verse la túnica completa si este patrón se extendía por toda ella?
  2. How does knowing that this was worn change the way you look at its geometry?¿Cómo cambia la mirada sobre su geometría al saber que era algo que se vestía?
  3. What does a fragment preserve, and what does it make impossible to know?¿Qué conserva un fragmento y qué hace imposible de saber?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause at how fragile this fragment is. I see the frayed, broken and wavy edges with loose threads that remind us this is only part of a larger tunic. The earthy red background is worn and reveals the fine weave of wool and linen in tapestry weave. The diagonal bands forming diamonds still keep greens, mustard yellows and creams, though wear is clear. Each loss tells us about the time passed since the eighth and ninth centuries.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see a woven constellation here. The diagonal bands cross like orbits and form large diamonds, like sky maps on an earthy red sky. At each crossing there are green and yellow oval medallions, like small planets with reddish cores. Inside each diamond there is another symmetrical medallion, crowned with a yellow plume. Everything is rhythm and geometric repetition, with no human figures, just an ordered universe that continues beyond the broken edges.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a very old and torn superhero blanket. It is red with big diamonds made of colorful stripes. I like to look for the medallions that look like little faces with tiny yellow hats on top. Some are complete in the middle and others are cut off at the edge because the cloth broke. If you touched it, it would feel a bit rough with little threads sticking out. I imagine whoever wore it looked very fancy with all those shiny little designs.

If you count the complete diamonds that fit inside the fragment, without counting those cut off by the edge, how many do you see?

    HintPista

Look at the center of the red textile, those that have the whole medallion inside.

  2. #2

What color is the main background of the weave, the one that covers the most surface behind the diamonds and medallions?

    HintPista

It is a warm tone, similar to clay or worn brick.

  3. #3

What large geometric shape is formed where the decorated diagonal bands cross?
