What you would seeLo que verías
The photograph shows, centered against a neutral gray background and lit from the front, one side of a large ceramic vessel with a wide mouth, short neck, and a body that narrows toward a low, rounded foot. Two thick, black vertical handles join the flat rim to the shoulders; below the rim runs an ochre band of repeated palmettes. The surface combines the reddish orange of the clay with a glossy black glaze, worn and cracked on the neck, base, and handles. In the main scene, painted in the red-figure technique, the light silhouettes stand out against the dark ground. On the left, a figure in a finely pleated garment stands in a chariot beside a large wheel with crossed spokes, holding long reins that run diagonally across the image. At center and right, horses crowd together, partly seen from behind, with wavy manes, slender legs, and tails marked with black lines, alongside other draped figures partly hidden behind them. Fine incised lines draw eyes, hands, fabrics, and muscles. Pale cracks, stains, and small losses of glaze are visible throughout, revealing the vessel’s age without preventing us from following its movement to the right.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the large wheel on the left and follow the reins diagonally toward the horses. Then look at how the animals overlap and are partly seen from behind: that crowding creates the sense of a procession about to move. A final glance at the cracks and worn black glaze reminds you this is also a fragile, used object.
ContextContexto
This is an Attic red-figure column-krater, dated to about 470–460 BCE and attributed to the Cleveland Painter, active in that period. A krater was a vessel for mixing wine and water. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is the most important of 12 vases linked to this artist, whose real name is unknown; the scholar John D. Beazley named him after Cleveland, and other works by him are held in museums in the United States, Europe, Greece, and Italy. The main scene is divine: Apollo, recognized by his lyre and laurel wreath, appears with three goddesses, probably Artemis, Hera, and Hebe. Their exact identification is not certain.

I focus on what time has left on the clay. I see the black gloss cracked on the neck, the handles and the base, and those pale fissures crossing the shine. The contrast between the reddish orange and the glossy black is still vivid, but there are losses and stains that speak of centuries. I love the ultra fine lines that shape the folds of the tunics, the wavy manes and the cross-spoked wheel of the chariot. It is a fragile balance between what is preserved and what has worn away.

This procession makes me think of orderly movement, like a parade of stars. Apollo advances in his chariot to the right, holding the long reins that stretch diagonally, and around him the horses gather with their tails and legs drawn with precision. It is a solemn scene, not frantic, as if following an orbit. I imagine those who mixed wine and water in this krater saw here a myth that gave rhythm to the feast, just as we look for constellations to make sense of the sky.

I love this giant vase! It looks like a huge jar with two big black ears on the sides. What I like most are the little horses, seen from behind with their tiny tails and skinny legs, as if they are squeezed together to move forward. The man on the chariot wears a dress with lots of folds and holds some long strings. On top there is a border with little flowers. It is a bit scratched and cracked, but that shows it is really, really old and has traveled a lot.
