What you would seeLo que verías

A black-and-white lithograph, nearly all darkness, showing a ship’s deck at night from a sharply tilted, close viewpoint. The composition falls diagonally from the upper right to the lower left. On the right, two tall, pale sections of hull or bulkhead rise like leaning towers, each pierced by a round, glowing porthole; between them is a thick black upright. Above them, thin rails and rigging cut across the black sky, and a heavy diagonal beam enters from the top left. In the left foreground, a sailor in light-colored work clothes lies stretched on his back on the sloping deck, arms and legs loose, face turned up, brightly lit against the grainy shadow. Near him, partly cropped by the edges, other men sit, slump, or rest their heads low, modeled in rough blacks and grays with only faces, shirts, and hands catching light. Toward the upper left, two more figures lean on the ship’s rail, one with his back turned, the other looking outward or upward. The lithographic crayon leaves a granular, chalky texture, especially in the deck’s broad dark slope. Below the image, on the white margin, handwritten inscriptions read “Trial Proof” at left and the artist’s signature and “’30” at right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two bright, tilted hull plates on the right and follow their diagonal down to the sailors stretched across the deck. Then look for the figures that almost disappear into shadow at the edges. The contrast between the exposed, moonlit body in the foreground and the watchful figures by the rail changes the mood from rest to quiet unease.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is *S. S. Glencairn: The Moon of the Caribbes* — spelled that way in the museum record — a 1930 lithograph by American artist Richard Beatty (1899–1961), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art and gifted by The Print Club of Cleveland. The title almost certainly refers to *The Moon of the Caribbees*, Eugene O’Neill’s one-act play about sailors aboard the tramp steamer *Glencairn*, part of his *S.S. Glencairn* cycle. The source does not describe the exact scene or state the literary connection explicitly, so that identification, while strongly suggested by the title, remains probable rather than documented here.

Según la fuente, esta es *S. S. Glencairn: The Moon of the Caribbes* — así, con esa ortografía en el registro del museo —, una litografía de 1930 del artista estadounidense Richard Beatty (1899–1961), conservada en el Cleveland Museum of Art como donación de The Print Club of Cleveland. El título remite casi con seguridad a *The Moon of the Caribbees*, la obra en un acto de Eugene O’Neill sobre los marineros del vapor de carga *Glencairn*, parte de su ciclo *S.S. Glencairn*.

Curious detailDato curioso

O’Neill’s *The Moon of the Caribbees* was first performed in 1918 by the Provincetown Players — more than a decade before Beatty turned its moonlit deck into this lithograph in 1930.

I focus on how this 1930 black and white lithograph is made. Almost everything is grainy darkness, with that chalky texture from the lithographic crayon visible on the great slope of the deck. What shines are just a few pale touches: shirts, hands, faces and those two round luminous portholes on the right. Below, the white margin shows the craft behind it: on the left it says Trial Proof and on the right the signature with ’30. It is a very controlled play of light.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

For me this is a deep night at sea. The sky is completely black, with no stars, and the only light seems to be the moon we do not see but that washes the pale shirts and the upturned faces. Those two illuminated portholes on the right are like small fixed moons on the hull. The deck slanted diagonally helps you feel the rocking of the ship. Everything invites you to look up, to search for light in the darkness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like the ship is sliding to one side and everyone is about to fall. There is a man lying on his back in light clothes, with floppy arms, as if he fell asleep in the moonlight. Others are sitting and huddled in the shadow and you can barely see them. Up top there are two men at the railing looking out. I like to count the little round lights that look like shiny eyes of the ship.

In the white margin below the image, what words in English are handwritten on the left side?

    HintPista

Look below the black area, on the white paper, on the opposite side from the signature with ’30.

  2. #2

On the right side of the composition, on the pale slanted shapes of the ship, how many round luminous portholes can you see?

    HintPista

They are bright circles that look like little moons, one on each pale tower separated by a dark post.

  3. #3

On which side of the image is the most illuminated sailor in light clothes lying on his back?
