Japanese woodblock diptych in horizontal format depicting an intimate winter interior, split into two panels by a central pillar and vertical calligraphy. In the foreground, on a pale tatami floor, four women and two children gather around a kotatsu, a low table covered by a thick quilt patterned in muted green and pale yellow. On the right, a standing woman in a grey-green kimono with a yellow obi lifts a rosy-cheeked baby in an orange geometric kimono; another woman piggybacks an older child. At the center, a kneeling girl in a red-striped kimono tends to them. Tiny toy figures lie scattered on the floor nearby. On the left, a young woman in a black kimono with a red collar tends a small gilded brazier glowing with red coals, while another woman is almost entirely hidden under the quilt, only her bare feet and covered head visible. Behind them, a woman in an orange and black kimono leans forward slightly. The background shows paper shoji screens, a window with falling white snow, and a painted screen with a heron and pine. The palette is soft and powdery, with ochres, dull greens, orange and black, rendered with delicate curvilinear lines and subtle shading.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the center where the lifted baby bridges the two sheets, then follow the patterned quilt that links the figures. Move from the warm interior details to the snowy window in the background to feel the contrast between outside cold and inside warmth. Look for the tiny toys on the floor, a small detail that changes the scene into a moment of interrupted play.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although the title promises four seasons, only this winter print is known to exist today, making it a rare survivor from an early series by Utamaro.

I pause at the kotatsu, that low table covered with the pale green and yellow quilt that brings warmth to the scene. I look at the paper, its light fibers and the soft ochre, orange and muted green pigments typical of woodblock printing. The lines are thin and curving, and there are delicate contrasts like the reddish coals in the golden brazier against the pale tatami. I also notice fragile details like the snow seen through the window and the screen with the heron, which speak of a careful and intimate winter interior.

Even though we are indoors, winter is felt everywhere. Outside, white snow falls seen through the window, a sign of long nights and overcast skies in the coldest season. Inside, the kotatsu and the brazier with reddish coals are the small domestic sun around which four women and two children gather. The central pillar divides the diptych as if marking a shift in light, from the golden warmth inside to the bluish white of the snow. It is a shelter against the winter darkness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I love that they are all cuddled under the kotatsu blanket! There is a baby with pink cheeks and an orange kimono being held, and another bigger child behind. On the floor there are little toys scattered, they are wrestlers, as if someone dropped them to be picked up. A girl in a red striped kimono is kneeling taking care of them and another stokes the little fire with tongs. And there is a lady hidden under the blanket showing only her feet and head, she looks so cozy and funny!
