What you would seeLo que verías
A single metal brooch is photographed vertically against a flat, matte gray background, seen from above and casting a soft shadow down its right side. It has a strong cross or T shape. A horizontal bar at the top ends in two large, round, slightly bulbous knobs, left and right, with a third similar knob rising from the center top. Between those knobs the bar shows short, squared, ribbed segments and small dark rings where the knobs attach, as if screwed or fitted into place. From the center descends the main body: first a high, curved, leaf-like bow, narrow at the edges and swelling in the middle, then a straighter, rectangular foot at the bottom with two small rounded details at its tip. The surface is worn and uneven. Much of the gilding survives as mottled gold and pale bronze patches, while darker, almost blackened and greenish areas show through where it has rubbed or flaked away. A fine decorated ridge runs down the center of the bow and foot, catching the light. The metal looks heavy, smooth on the knobs from handling, rougher and pitted elsewhere. No person, textile, pin mechanism, or scale reference is visible, so its exact size is not clear from the image alone.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the cross-like silhouette and the three large knobs, then move down the curved central bow to the narrow foot. Look closely at where the gold has worn away and dark metal shows through. That wear changes the piece from a gleaming jewel into an object that was clearly handled and worn.
ContextContexto
This crossbow fibula, dated to about 350–400, is attributed to a Gallo-Roman or Romano-British culture of the 4th century, in the Migration Period. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, fibulae fastened garments much like a modern safety pin, at a time when buttons were not used; they held a cloak closed, were worn by men and women, commonly on the right shoulder, and were made in many sizes and forms. This example is made of bronze, gilt bronze, silver, and niello. The source suggests it may have been made in Roman-occupied Britain, although its exact place of manufacture is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Crossbow fibulae are named for their resemblance to the weapon, and their prominent knobs are often described as onion-shaped domes.

- What does such a visible clasp, worn on the shoulder, communicate beyond simply holding a cloak closed?¿Qué comunica un broche tan visible, usado en el hombro, además de simplemente cerrar un manto?
- How does the loss of gilding change the way we imagine its original appearance and value?¿Cómo cambia el desgaste del dorado la manera en que imaginamos su aspecto y su valor originales?

What holds my attention is the surface, because it shows its age. It is gilded bronze with silver and niello, but the gilding is no longer even: there are pale, shiny patches and other dark, blackened and greenish areas where use and time lifted the gold. I see the central ridge that catches the light and the three bulbous knobs on top, with those dark rings where they are joined. The metal looks heavy, smooth on the knobs from handling and pitted on the curved bow and the rectangular foot.

I see it like a small constellation shaped as a cross or a T cut out against a flat matte gray background. On top there is a horizontal bar with two large knobs on the sides and one more in the center, like three aligned stars, and from there the body drops down with a high leaf-shaped bow and a straight rectangular foot. The soft shadow to the right gives it volume, as if it were floating. It amazes me that something like this, photographed from above with no scale reference, once fastened a cloak on the shoulder in the fourth century.

It looks like an old golden T with three little balls on top, two on the sides and one in the middle. It has a middle part that is like a raised little leaf and below a straight little leg with two round dots at the tip. Some parts shine with a pale gold and others look dark and greenish, as if it were a little dirty or scratched. It is alone on a gray background and casts a small shadow to one side. I imagine it as a giant clip to close a superhero cape.
