What you would seeLo que verías
A small circular brooch stands upright at the center of the frame, photographed against a dark gray background that lightens toward the bottom. The piece is seen from the front and casts a short, soft shadow to the left across a matte gray surface. Its main body is a flat disc edged in dark, weathered bronze, with four small rounded loops projecting at the top, bottom, left, and right, giving it a quiet cross-like silhouette. Each loop has a small hole and a mottled greenish-gray surface. Concentric raised rings divide the disc into bands filled with champlevé enamel: patches of burnt orange, deep blue, brick red, and faded cream or white, now chipped, cracked, and uneven. At the very center sits a raised circular boss with a tiny dark blue dot. The metal shows green and gray corrosion, pitting, and worn edges, while the enamel looks granular and matte rather than glossy. Light falls from above, softening the upper rim and emphasizing the low relief of the rings. The scale feels intimate, like an object made to be held in the palm and seen up close on clothing. No clasp or reverse side is visible.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the raised center and move outward, ring by ring, as if following ripples. Then notice the four small loops at the edges: they turn a simple disc into a cross-like form. The most telling detail is the enamel worn away in places, where time reveals as much as the original colors.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this ornamental brooch, by an unknown maker, dates to about 100–300 CE and is Gallo-Roman or Romano-British, from the Migration period. Made of bronze with champlevé enamel, it worked as a garment clasp, much like the generally larger fibulae. The museum notes that enameling was especially popular among peoples on the fringes of the Roman Empire, chiefly Celts and Gauls, and that by the 200s enameled brooches were being made in abundance in Britain and Gaul, in what is now France and Belgium. Its exact place of manufacture is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising visual observation: after some eighteen centuries, the small patches of deep blue enamel still read as intensely saturated against the dulled orange, red, and cream.

This brooch makes me think about time on metal. I see the bronze disc with greenish and gray corrosion, worn edges and champlevé enamel chipped and grainy in burnt orange, deep blue, brick red and cream. The four little pierced loops form a discreet cross and the small blue central button draws the eye. I notice how the light reveals the low relief of the concentric rings and how its intimate, palm-sized scale speaks of an ornament meant to be worn close to the body.

Looking at it I see a small planetary system. The disc is like an orbit seen face on, with concentric rings that recall circles of color around a core. The blue dot in the center looks like a planet and the orange, red and cream tones suggest different surfaces. The four little loops are like satellites aligned in a cross. Its dull, worn finish reminds me of the ancient night sky, something observed up close that still suggests a serene and orderly vastness.

It looks like a round cookie with colorful decoration. It has a dark little rim and four tiny ears with holes, one on top, one at the bottom and two on the sides. In the middle there are circles like a rainbow in orange, blue, red and creamy white, all scratchy as if the paint faded over time. In the center there is a blue dot that looks like a button. I like it because it is tiny, it fits in my hand and shines just a little, like a very old toy treasure.
