A small, globular pot occupies the centre of a studio photograph, seen in three-quarter view and slightly from above. The background grades from deep black at the top to pale grey on the surface below, where the piece casts a soft shadow to the right. On the left, a short, thick, cylindrical spout projects upward at an angle; its circular mouth reveals a dark interior. On the right, a C-shaped handle joins the shoulder to the middle of the body, enclosing an oval of shadow. Above, a flat circular lid, only slightly wider than the mouth, carries a small pointed finial like a droplet at its centre. Two small, rough, ochre patches on the lid interrupt the glaze. The body tapers to a low circular foot and is covered in a smooth, semi-glossy celadon glaze between grey-green and pale green. White highlights run across the shoulder and lid. Fine incised lines — several verticals crossed by one horizontal — form an irregular grid suggesting the lobes of a melon or gourd. Tiny speckles, faint tonal variations, and a small ochre chip on the foot register firing, use, and the passage of time.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall silhouette — spout, body, and handle in balance — before looking at any detail. Then follow the incised grid around the belly and notice how irregular it is. Finally, look at the lid and the foot: the small ochre marks there shift the piece from a perfect object to something fired, handled, and aged.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a wine pot in southern celadon ware, made in China in the 1200s–1300s, spanning the Southern Song (1127–1279) and Yuan (1271–1368) dynasties. The maker is unknown. It is glazed porcelain, also catalogued more broadly as ceramic, and belongs to the museum's Chinese Art department. Celadon refers to the translucent grey-green glaze, highly valued in China and widely traded across Asia. The exact kiln, owner, and place of use are not recorded in the source, so any more specific origin or occasion of use remains unknown, though the form was probably intended for serving warm drinks, as the title indicates.

Curious detailDato curioso

A close look reveals two small ochre spots on the lid where the surface appears rough and unglazed — a modest imperfection that makes the firing and handling history visible on an otherwise very even glaze.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the surface of this wine jar. Its celadon glaze, between grayish green and pale green, is smooth and semi glossy, with white reflections on the shoulder and lid. I notice the two small rough ochre spots on the lid that interrupt the glaze, and the tiny ochre chip on the circular foot. The incised lines forming a melon lobe grid are subtle, almost a drawing under glass. They are traces of firing, use and time that tell us about an everyday object made in glazed porcelain between the 13th and 14th centuries.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This jar reminds me of a small planet photographed from above at a three quarter angle. The globular body and flat lid with its drop shaped finial look like a polar cap. The cylindrical spout on the left and the C shaped handle on the right are like two opposite satellites, one solid and one with an oval void in shadow. The background fading from deep black to light gray gives the feeling of floating in space, casting a soft shadow to the right. Its incised grid, like meridians, gently organizes its ceramic world.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little pumpkin wearing a hat. Its belly is round and has little lines that make melon like segments. On one side there is a short chubby spout where warm wine probably came out, and on the other side a C shaped handle to hold it without burning yourself. On top it has a flat little lid with a tiny peak in the middle like a droplet. It has two ochre colored spots on the lid and a little nick on the base. It shines a bit and light reflects on it as if it were wet.

What rough ochre detail interrupts the smooth glaze on the upper part of the piece?

    HintPista

Look on the flat lid, near the drop shaped finial, for two little spots that do not shine.
