What you would seeLo que verías

The image shows a single block of sandstone photographed frontally, centered slightly toward the upper part of the frame, against a dark charcoal background that fades into light gray beneath. The object rests on a smooth, pale surface, beyond a shallow depth of field, and is lit softly from above so that a gentle shadow settles beneath it. Its stone is rough, crumbly and pitted, in gray-brown and ocher tones with almost no recent shine; whitish, eroded patches suggest wear rather than fresh polish. Above a flat, broken support rise two walls and two feet: the taller one, on the left, leans forward on its toes and is sheared off at the ankle, exposing a pale interior. It wears a band around the ankle and a row of beads at the base of the toes. The second foot, lower and at the right, touches the ground with heavy, rounded toes and is also cut short. Both stand on an oval plinth edged with lotus petals. Beneath it, a second row of smaller petals gives way to the base proper: vertical ribs, large curls at the corners and broad falling leaves, with a pointed central lobe. Small chips, holes and stains make the age it claims to have seem almost convincing.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First notice that the body is absent: only two feet remain, and one is lifted on tiptoe, so begin by imagining the pose they once supported. Then look closely at the break at the raised ankle and the bead row above the toes, where the carving asks to be read as the trace of a dance step. Finally, shift attention to the pedestal: its double row of lotus petals and the wide leaf below confer dignity on a fragment that, without that base, might seem merely a ruin.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this sandstone piece as a 20th-century fake, catalogued by the Cleveland Museum of Art within its department of Indian and Southeast Asian Art, with purchase support from the J. H. Wade Fund. Its title names a devatā — a deity — or a yakṣī, a female nature spirit frequent in Indian art, but the museum record does not allow us to know which figure it meant to imitate, who carved it, for what market, or when it was acquired. Although it evokes old carved stone from Orissa, in present-day Odisha, its value today lies less in devotion than in what it reveals about imitation, collecting, and the desire for antiquity.

Curious detailDato curioso

It is unusual and instructive that the museum exhibits it openly under the word “fake”: its interest is not to pass as ancient, but to teach viewers how an imitation can also become a historical document.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I look at this sandstone block and first notice its rough, pitted surface in grayish brown and ochre tones with whitish patches from erosion. There is no shine from new polishing. I see two feet truncated at the ankle resting on an oval plinth bordered with lotus petals. The left foot is higher, tilted forward on the toes, with an ankle band and a row of beads at the base of the toes. Below there are large scrolls at the corners and broad hanging leaves with a pointed central lobe.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I like to think about how light reveals this piece like a landscape. Soft light from above casts a faint shadow on a pale surface and makes the dark background fade downward like a horizon. The two truncated feet look like two interrupted celestial bodies on their oval plinth. The beads on the toes and the ankle band are like tiny satellites. It is a 20th century forgery imitating ancient stone from Orissa, but its play of light and shadow makes us look closely.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I just see some stone feet with no body. One is higher than the other and looks like it is on tiptoe, as if dancing. The other is smaller with chubby round toes. Both are cut off at the ankle and you can see a paler inside. They have a little bracelet on the ankle and tiny beads on the toes. They stand on a base shaped with lotus flower petals and underneath there are big leaves and curls at the corners. It looks old and scratchy.
