What you would seeLo que verías

A finely hatched black-and-white engraving in vertical format on aged ivory paper. At the center, an older bearded man in a hooded cap and heavy, draped cloak sits on a rock, leaning over an open book held in his left hand while writing with his right. His face is deeply lined, eyes half-closed in concentration. In the immediate foreground to his right, a large ox lies on the ground, its curved horns, textured hide and gentle gaze rendered with dense cross-hatching; the animal looks straight out at the viewer and fills nearly a third of the lower composition. At the saint’s feet lie a second closed book with clasps, a slipped-off shoe, small pebbles and tufts of grass. In the background on the left, a gnarled leafless tree holds a hanging flask and a small bundle. Light is soft and even, modeling is achieved entirely through delicate linear work. The artist’s monogram with a Gothic L appears in the lower right corner, and the sheet shows slightly uneven, deckled margins.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the ox’s direct stare, which anchors the whole scene and meets your eye. Then follow the saint’s writing hand and the weighty folds of his cloak. Notice the small items scattered on the ground: they turn a holy portrait into a quiet moment of work outdoors.

ContextContexto

The work is identified as St. Luke, dated about 1508, by Lucas van Leyden, a Netherlandish printmaker and painter active from 1494 to about 1533. It is an engraving, a leading medium for the circulation of religious images in 16th-century northern Europe. The ox is the traditional attribute of the Evangelist Luke. No extended source description is provided, but the impression is part of the Prints department of the Cleveland Museum of Art and was a Gift of The Print Club of Cleveland. It likely belonged to a popular series of Evangelists or saints made possible by print culture.

Curious detailDato curioso

Lucas van Leyden was a child prodigy of engraving, producing highly accomplished prints by his early teens that were collected and praised by Albrecht Dürer.

This copper engraving from 1508 makes me look very closely. The aged ivory paper still holds that endless net of minute hatching Lucas van Leyden used to model the heavy mantle, the ox's coat and even the pebbles on the ground. I pause at the closed book with clasps by the saint's feet, the loose sandal and the bundle hanging from the dry tree: traces of use, of travel. The monogram with the gothic L in the corner is his discreet signature, printed not drawn.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

There are no stars here, but there is a soft diffuse light with no hard shadows, like a cloudy dawn. The saint leans over the open book to write and the ox lying in the foreground looks straight at us, anchoring the scene to earth. I am intrigued by the twisted leafless tree in the back, with a canteen hanging from it: a lonely landmark on the horizon. Everything is built with lines, not color, as if the universe were drawn only with orbits.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The ox takes up almost a third of the picture and looks like it is posing for a photo! It is lying right in front, with its little curved horns and its streaky fur, looking at us with a sweet face while the bearded man writes very focused in his book. It makes me giggle that the man is barefoot and his sandal is tossed next to another closed book on the ground. In the back there is a leafless tree with a little bottle hanging, as if they were on a hike.
