What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical black-and-white engraving with a rounded, arched top, printed on pale paper with wide, empty margins. The composition is extremely crowded, with almost no open space. At the top center sits a large, bearded, crowned God the Father, surrounded by a circular halo, one hand raised and his robes billowing around him. Angels crowd in on both sides: some blow long trumpets, others lean, reach, or tumble forward in flowing draperies with detailed feathered wings. Below God is a draped altar, and beneath it another angel flies horizontally, arms outstretched, amid dense clouds made of small rounded puffs. Trumpeting angels in long robes occupy the left and right edges, standing as if on clouds. The lower half turns chaotic: a small ship crowded with figures, churning water, strange sea creatures, fallen bodies, and tangled limbs fill the foreground, especially at lower right, where naked corpses pile over one another. At lower left there are trees, tiny buildings, and falling figures. Fine cross-hatching creates deep blacks, soft grays, and the metallic sheen of fabric and flesh. Small inscriptions appear at left and at bottom center.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the top, with the calm, monumental figure of God, and then let your eye fall slowly into the chaos at the bottom. Notice how angels with trumpets frame the scene on both sides and guide that descent. The contrast between the order above and the tangled bodies below changes the print from an illustration into an experience of collapse.

ContextContexto

Jean Duvet (1485–1561), a French goldsmith from Dijon before he became an engraver, made this print in 1561, according to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, which preserves it. It depicts the opening of the seventh seal, described at the beginning of chapter 8 of Revelation, the last book of the New Testament. The source notes that, working far from the main printmaking centers of Italy and northern Europe, Duvet probably learned by studying prints by other masters, especially Albrecht Dürer's Apocalypse woodcuts. Exactly how this impression circulated in its own time is not stated in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

At the bottom center, an inscription reads “HIST / CAP·8· / APOC”, pointing directly to chapter 8 of Revelation, where the seventh seal is opened and then trumpets are given to seven angels.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on how Jean Duvet, a goldsmith before becoming a printmaker, fills every millimeter with very fine lines that create deep blacks and soft grays on the light paper with wide empty margins. The semicircular arch at the top frames God the Father, huge and crowned, with a circular halo. Below, the chaos of bodies, the little ship and the clouds made of tiny rounded dots show that almost metallic shine only a goldsmith can achieve with the burin and patience.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this print as a sky breaking open. At the top, God the Father dominates the center, large and bearded, with a raised hand, like a sun surrounded by orbits. At his sides the trumpet angels look like constellations in motion, leaning and falling among wings and wavy drapery. Below, the altar and the angel flying horizontally among clouds made of little spheres mark the equator of the scene, while the tiny ship and small buildings remind us how small we are before such vastness.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are so many things squished together! At the top there is God the Father really big with a beard and a crown, like a giant grandpa with light around him. Many angels with long trumpets surround him and some look like they are about to fall. Below there is a little ship on the water with people, weird sea monsters, and a pile of naked bodies all heaped on the right. On the left there are little trees and tiny houses. The clouds look made of little balls and everything shines even though it is black and white.

  1. #1

At the very top center, who is the bearded, crowned and largest figure of all, surrounded by a circular halo?

    HintPista

Look at the top center for the biggest character, with a beard and crown, with one hand raised.

  2. #2

In the lower half of the print, what small object with people on board sails on the rough water among sea creatures?

    HintPista

Look at the chaotic lower area, between bodies and sea monsters, there is a vessel full of figures.

  3. #3

If you look at the left and right edges of the scene, what long and straight instrument do the angels in long robes standing on clouds hold?

    HintPista

Notice the angels on the sides, they all carry the same elongated object to blow.
