What you would seeLo que verías
A slender, vertical female figure stands at the center of the image against a graduated gray background, darker above and lighter below. Photographed from the front and shown full-length, she stands on a small, irregular wooden base. Her elongated, narrow proportions suggest a carving meant to be seen frontally, alongside other figures. A veil covers her head and falls on both sides of her face. She wears a dark, almost blue-black tunic and a terracotta-red mantle that crosses her body diagonally, forming curved folds picked out with whitish lines. At her chest is a pale, T-shaped trim. Her hands are joined in front of her in prayer or supplication; they are worn and have lost definition, as have the feet barely visible on the base. Her face is oval, with half-closed eyes looking downward, a straight nose, and a small, closed mouth. Her expression is restrained and sorrowful. The polychromed oak surface looks rough, cracked, and flaked: patches of red, ochre, black, and white remain, but much of the pigment has been lost, revealing the brown tones of the wood and of age. Soft light models the volume without harsh highlights.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the diagonal of the red mantle and the white curved folds that guide the eye downward. Then return to the clasped hands and the lowered gaze: the grief is not in a dramatic gesture, but in that stillness. Finally, look closely at the chipped surface, where the loss of paint also changes the expression.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this Mourning Virgin, by an unknown maker, dates to around 1250–1275 and comes from the Kingdom of Castile and León, in 13th-century Spain. It is carved in polychromed oak. The museum notes that this figure and one of Saint John once belonged to a Crucifixion group, with Christ on the cross at the center; only the Virgin is shown in this image. The survival of its original polychromy is rare and recalls patterns from early textiles. Although made in the 13th century, its style still reflects the late 12th century. The specific church or place it was made for is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
Much medieval wooden sculpture was originally painted in vivid color; the relatively bare, brown appearance we often associate with it today is frequently the result of pigment lost over the centuries.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- How does the meaning of this figure change when we imagine it beside a crucified Christ and Saint John, rather than alone?¿Cómo cambia el sentido de esta figura cuando la imaginamos junto a Cristo crucificado y a san Juan, y no sola?
- Why represent grief through stillness and clasped hands instead of a more theatrical gesture?¿Por qué representar el dolor con quietud y manos juntas, en vez de un gesto más teatral?
- Does the loss of color make the sculpture seem more distant, or does it make its age and fragility more moving?¿La pérdida del color vuelve la escultura más lejana o hace más conmovedora su antigüedad y fragilidad?

I pause at this wood that has lived for almost eight centuries. It is polychromed oak, and what surprises me is that it still keeps traces of color, something uncommon according to the museum. I see the terracotta red of the mantle, the bluish black of the tunic and ochre and white spots, all cracked and flaking to reveal the brownish tone of time. The joined hands and the feet are very worn, they have lost definition. That fragility speaks to me of devotion, of years of closeness and also of loss.

I see her as a figure made to be viewed from the front, slender and vertical, cut out against that gradient gray background that goes from dark at the top to light at the bottom, like a sky at dusk. Her veil falls on both sides of her oval face and her half-closed eyes look downward with restrained sadness. The mantle crosses diagonally with curved folds outlined in white. It reminds me that she was not alone, she was part of a Crucifixion group with Christ at the center and Saint John at one side, although here we see only her.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
She looks like a very sad lady who is praying. She has her little hands together in front of her chest and her eyes almost closed looking down, as if she is about to cry. She wears a veil on her head and a brick-red cape with a dark tunic underneath. Her paint looks very old and rough with cracks, you can see brown parts of the wood. She stands alone on a small wooden base, but I was told that before she was with others keeping someone important company.
