Silk or cotton: needle lace
What you would seeLo que verías
A very long, low horizontal strip occupies almost the full width of the image against a plain black background that makes the lace stand out. It is a textile piece in aged ivory, between cream, bone, and pale gray, photographed spread out flat and without folds. The upper edge is nearly straight, with a fine, regular finish; the lower edge ends in a border of small waves and scallops, slightly irregular because of the flexibility of the material. The interior is a dense, continuous surface of interlaced plant motifs, with no large empty areas. Open flowers, buds, curved leaves, scrolling stems, and forms resembling stylized palmettes or tulips repeat in a symmetrical sequence along the strip. Visually, there are no human figures or objects in the foreground: only the openwork network of the lace. Some areas are more compact and opaque, with filled petals; others are extremely fine meshes, almost transparent, formed by threads, small plaits, and tiny picots that cast subtle shadows on the black ground. The light is even and frontal, without strong highlights, and reveals the irregular texture of the thread, small knots, and variations in tone. At the scale of the photograph, the piece looks fragile and light, although its design is complex and laborious. Looked at slowly, the joins between separately made motifs become visible, and the repetition is not entirely mechanical: each flower retains slight differences.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the horizontal rhythm from one end to the other and notice how the floral motifs repeat. Then move closer to a single flower and compare it with the next one. The tiny joins between separately made motifs change the reading: it is not a printed pattern, but a surface built piece by piece.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art record, this work is titled Lace Panel, is by an unknown maker, comes from France, and dates from 1740–1750. It is classified in the Textiles department, in the Lace category, and was given by Mrs. Edward S. Harkness in memory of Mrs. Stephen V. Harkness. The technique is listed as needle lace in silk or cotton; the source itself does not state the fiber with certainty. Its description notes that the motifs were made separately and then joined with plaits and picot filling. In the eighteenth century needle lace was specialized, highly valued handwork, probably used as trimming for clothing or textiles, although the specific use of this panel is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual observation: although the pattern looks continuous and almost printed from a distance, the motifs were made separately and only later joined, so the panel contains many small handmade irregularities.

I look at this horizontal ivory panel on a black background and think about its fragility. It is needle lace shown flat and without folds, with a straight upper edge and a lower edge of wavy scallops. I focus on the filled opaque petals contrasted with very fine almost transparent netting. Each interwoven flower and leaf shows slight differences, because the motifs were made separately and then joined with braids and tiny picots. The even light reveals knots, tonal shifts between cream and bone and subtle thread shadows of the aged yarn.

Against the smooth black this long band looks like an elongated constellation. The dark background makes the ivory tones of cream, bone and pale gray stand out like stars. I follow the curling stems, the palmettes and stylized tulips repeating symmetrically to form a continuous net without large gaps. It reminds me of sky maps where every point is connected. Dense areas are like compact nebulae and the open mesh areas are transparent voids. Looked at calmly, the repetition is not mechanical, each bud keeps a small variation like its own star.

It looks like a very long path of flowers made with light bone colored thread. The top is straight and the bottom has little waves like tiny hills or little teeth. I like to find open flowers, closed buds and little leaves hugging curly stems. There are no people or animals, only openwork lace with tiny holes that let the black behind show through. Some parts look thick and others very thin like spider webs. If you look carefully you notice no flower is exactly the same, though they all look like little sisters in a row.
