The image is a nearly monochromatic drawing in sepia, gray, black, and off-white tones, showing a city flooded by enormous waves. The upper half is filled with a turbulent sky of long, swirling clouds drawn with curved, repetitive strokes; two small white birds appear at upper left, almost lost in the wind. Below, the water occupies more than half the scene and is rendered with hundreds of fine, wavy white lines that move diagonally and create a sense of violent motion. On the left stands a tall, dark, multi-story brick building with rows of rectangular windows and several chimneys, still upright despite the flood. In the center background are smaller houses with pitched roofs and orderly facades. Several sailing vessels tilt at impossible angles among the buildings, their masts leaning and sails swollen. In the foreground, small wooden structures float overturned or half-submerged, including a house at lower right seen from above. At lower left, two tiny figures ride in a boat beside a floating shed; near the bottom center, a person clings to debris next to barrels. The paper looks aged, scratched, and worn, which heightens the fragility of the scene.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the waves in the lower half and notice how they erase any boundary between harbor and street. Then compare that agitation with the calm, orderly windows of the buildings. Finally, look for the small human figures: their scale makes the disaster feel both close and overwhelming.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this anonymous American drawing from 1815 shows Market Square in Providence, Rhode Island, during the Great September Gale, a hurricane that struck in September 1815 and carried ships into the streets of downtown. It is made with black crayon and pastel, with graphite and stylus, scraped and incised in places. The source highlights the contrast between the meticulous depiction of real buildings and the almost abstract rendering of waves and weather. The author's identity is not known, and it is not certain whether the scene was drawn from direct observation or from accounts of the event.

Curious detailDato curioso

A verifiable feature of the technique is that parts of the water and sky were not only drawn, but scraped and incised into the surface, so the storm is literally carved into the paper.

I pause to look at how this 1815 drawing of Market Square in Providence was made. It was created with black crayon and pastel with graphite and a stylus, scraping and incising the paper in some areas. I am moved by the contrast: the brick buildings with their windows and chimneys are rendered in great detail, as if trying to save them, while the waves are repetitive, abstract white lines. The aged paper, scratched and in sepia, grey and broken white tones, also tells the story of the fragility of the moment.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look first at the sky that fills the upper half. There are long, swirling clouds made with curved lines that seem to spin endlessly because of the September hurricane of 1815. At the top left there are two tiny white birds, almost erased by the wind. Below, the water moves diagonally with hundreds of wavy lines that create violent movement. I am struck by how the artist used an almost abstract language for the weather, different from the orderly detail of the houses and the tilted sailing ships among the streets.

The ships are in the city! I see sailing ships tilted between the buildings with their masts all crooked and that looks super strange because they should be at sea. The water covers everything and there are little wooden houses floating upside down, one is seen from above in the corner. At the bottom left two tiny people are in a boat next to a floating shed and in the center someone is clinging to planks with barrels. The tall dark building on the left is still standing and that gives me a little hope.
