What you would seeLo que verías
A Latin cross stands upright and centered against a smooth background that shades from dark gray at the top to almost white below. The vertical arm is longer than the horizontal one, and the whole surface is covered in gold worked with fine, swirling filigree that catches the light in small, uneven reliefs. At the crossing sits a round medallion dominated by a large, heart- or teardrop-shaped blue sapphire, set point-down, surrounded by small pearls, green and dark blue stones, and a few empty settings. Each arm holds a square cloisonné enamel plaque near its middle: a winged creature at the top, others on the left and right, and a winged human figure at the bottom, all worn and partly damaged, with losses to the colored enamel. Around them are oval and faceted gems in deep red, garnet, violet, pale pink quartz, emerald green, and clear crystal, together with white pearls, arranged symmetrically but not identically. The gold edges show dents, darkened recesses, and missing stones, so the object looks both splendid and fragile. Photographed frontally, at a scale that fills the frame, it reads less as jewelry than as a heavy, sacred sign meant to be seen from a distance.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin at the large blue stone in the center, where the arms meet, then move outward to each end in turn. Compare the four enamel plaques and try to identify each creature before reading the context. Finally, look for empty settings and damaged enamel: those losses reveal almost a thousand years of handling and use.
ContextContexto
This ceremonial cross is dated to 1038 or shortly thereafter and is attributed, with some uncertainty, to Lower Saxony, Germany, in the 11th century. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Countess Gertrude, who died in 1077, commissioned it for the church of Saint Blaise after the death of her husband, Count Liudolf of Brunswick, in 1038. It was made to be carried in liturgical processions or placed on an altar, and crosses of this type could also contain relics, which made them objects of devotion in themselves. Its maker is unknown. It is now in the Medieval Art collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso
The four plaques are not decorative animals chosen at random: together they are the traditional symbols of the four Evangelists, with John's eagle at the top, Mark's lion on the left, Luke's ox on the right, and Matthew's angel below, all oriented around the sapphire at the center.

Looking at this cross, what strikes me first is how fragile it feels despite all the gold. The fine filigree still catches the light, but the edges show dents, darkened gaps and empty settings where gems are missing. The four cloisonné enamel plaques are worn, with losses of color that reveal almost a thousand years of wear. The large heart-shaped blue sapphire remains at the center, surrounded by pearls and red and green stones. It is splendid and at the same time highly vulnerable.

It reminds me of looking at a constellation made into an object. The Latin cross works like a golden sky and the gems are stars of different colors, red like Mars, green, violet and clear like ice. At the center, the drop-shaped blue sapphire draws the eye like a dominant planet, and the pearls around it are like small moons. It is symmetrical but not identical, like an irregular celestial vault, designed to shine from afar in a procession, just like a constellation in the dark.

It looks like a treasure cross from a storybook. It is all gold with lots of sparkles and colorful stones, red, green, pink and clear ones, like candies. In the middle it has a giant blue heart that shines the most, with little white pearls around it. Each arm has a small square with a winged creature, but they are a bit blurry and broken. It looks heavy and big, so everyone can see it when it is carried while walking. Even though some little stones are missing, it still looks magical.
