What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is a horizontal textile panel, much wider than it is tall, photographed flat against a very pale gray background. Its base is an off-white linen cloth with a visible weave and a slightly irregular surface; its edges are frayed and its corners somewhat worn. Across it spreads a dense, symmetrical embroidery in strong reds, coral, grayish green, beige, and cream, worked in threads that appear to be silk because of their slight sheen. The composition is organized in bands. An outer edge runs around the entire perimeter with short stitches like small teeth; just inside it, a border alternates red ovals with hourglass-shaped motifs in green and cream tones. The central field is divided by red lines into two horizontal bands and several rectangular compartments. Within them, geometric forms repeat: diagonal crosses, raised vertical rectangles, four-pointed stars, elongated horizontal bars, and small motifs recalling stylized plants. At the center, two cross-shaped flowers in pale green and beige stand out, flanked by red elements. Some threads protrude, the thickness of the stitches varies, and the symmetry is not perfect — visible traces of work done by hand.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the outer border all the way around, then move into the divided rectangles at the center. Notice how the two pale, cross-shaped flowers break the dominance of red. On a closer look, the small irregularities in the stitches change the piece from a rigid pattern into unmistakable handwork.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a panel by an unknown maker, dated to about 1780–1840 and associated with Tambov province, Russia. It is made of plain-weave linen embroidered with silk and probably embellished the end of a bathing towel. The Cleveland Museum of Art notes that textiles of this kind preserve ancient folk motifs, held ritual significance, and reveal the importance of textiles in their society. It also links this example to the prominent collector Natalia de Shabelsky, whose collecting helped preserve works like this. The maker, the precise place of production, and the panel's original owner are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

A striking visual observation: although red covers most of the embroidery, the only clearly green elements are concentrated in the two central cross-shaped flowers and in small motifs along the border, so the eye returns to them again and again.

If you look closely you will see the raw linen is worn at the edges and frayed at the corners. The weave is irregular and shows the work of a hand loom. On top, the silk embroidery has a soft shine and forms very orderly bands. I love the tiny tooth-like stitches of the outer border and the band of red ovals with green hourglass shapes. Each stitch has a different thickness and some threads stick out, and that imperfect symmetry reminds us a hand embroidered this towel end between 1780 and 1840.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this panel as an orderly sky. The pale linen ground is the firmament and the red and green embroidery are constellations. At the center there are two cruciform flowers that look like four-pointed stars, surrounded by diagonal crosses and bars that could be old maps. The record says it comes from Tambov and had a ritual use, perhaps to protect the home. I like to think the maker wanted to leave a symmetrical cosmos, with ovals and bulging rectangles like aligned planets.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a super long road full of little drawings. It is cream colored with lots of bright reds and light greens. It has a border with tiny points and then red ovals like little eggs. In the middle there are two little flowers shaped like crosses and lots of Xs and little stars. It is not perfect, you can see threads sticking out and I like that because you can tell someone made it by hand. They say it was for a bath towel long ago in Russia and it was embroidered with shiny silk thread.
