What you would seeLo que verías

In the center of the image, against a background fading from black at the top to light gray below, sits a closed, low, square case, seen slightly from above and from the front. Its surface is a deep, glossy red lacquer, densely decorated in gold and orange with a small-scale landscape: pavilions with curved roofs, terraces, bridges, stylized trees, cloud-like flowers, and tiny human figures distributed as if in a miniature city. The composition is divided by horizontal folds crossed by dull silver-gray metal plates: two hinges at the top, two in the middle, and a wide clasp in the center of the front edge, with a rectangular opening and rounded, almost cloud-shaped contours. On the lower section, just above the clasp, an irregular, brighter red patch interrupts the decoration; it looks like wear or a loss of the painted design. The sides show lower borders with fine undulating lines. The lacquer looks smooth and slightly reflective, the metal matte and aged. Soft light from above creates gentle shadows beneath the box and highlights its edges. No people, text, or scale reference appears; the object seems intimate, made to be held and opened by hand.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First, notice that the mirror remains hidden: what you see is its protective case. Then, move closer to the surface and follow the tiny gold pavilions, trees, and figures. Finally, look at the bright red patch and the worn metal clasp, traces that turn a luxurious object into a used one.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is a Mirror in a Lacquer Case by an unknown author, made in China during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), around 1800–1825. It is made of lacquered paper and a glass mirror, belongs to the Chinese Art department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, and was a gift of Mrs. Malcolm L. McBride. That red lacquer speaks to me of hands protecting something fragile. I see the low square box, glossy, covered in gold with pavilions, bridges and trees like a miniature city. Those gray metal fittings stop me, two hinges on top, two in the middle and the clasp at the front, dull and aged against the lacquer shine. Below, right above the clasp, there is a vivid patch where paint was lost, a wear mark that tells its intimate use. It is lacquered paper from China, Qing dynasty, around 1800 to 1825, made to hold a glass mirror we cannot see because the case is closed.

When I look at this closed box I think of a miniature night sky. The black background on top fading to light gray below reminds me of the horizon at dusk. On the intense red, the gold draws pavilions and clouds like constellations, and those tiny figures are like points of light scattered across an urban firmament. The gray metal bands cross it like meridians, ordering the golden chaos. We cannot see the glass mirror it holds inside, but I imagine that when opened it reflected faces as the moon reflects the sun, an intimate object for looking at oneself in private.

It looks like a little treasure box for keeping secrets. It is square, red and very shiny, and everywhere it has tiny golden drawings with little houses with curvy roofs, bridges and small trees. If you look closely you see very tiny people walking around that shiny city. It has gray metal parts that are like belts with clasps so it does not open by itself. At the bottom there is a stronger red spot where the paint got scratched. It is closed so you cannot see the mirror inside, but I am sure that when you open it you can see your face and make funny faces.
