Gum tempera, ink, and gold on paper

What you would seeLo que verías

A wide, horizontal rectangular paper folio in warm ivory with a slightly porous, gently cockled texture and softly worn, uneven edges. Its surface is densely filled with horizontal lines of neat black calligraphy from the Jain tradition of western India. The layout features a large central text block flanked by two narrower side columns, separated by thin vertical rules in orange-red. Near the bottom center a solid, vivid red circle with slightly feathered edges interrupts the script, marking the traditional string-hole for binding the pothi manuscript. The script is precise and rhythmic, with small diacritical marks and consistent stroke weight. Light is even and matte, characteristic of gum tempera on paper, with no gloss. The palette is restrained: creamy ground, deep black ink and the striking red accent. The scale is intimate, a book to be held in both hands and read up close, suggesting gestures of careful recitation and reverence, with tiny flecks and age spots visible upon calm inspection.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the visual rhythm of the black lines, then pause on the bold red circle at the center that breaks the text. Notice how the narrow outer columns frame the main block and how the subtle wear of the paper speaks of age and devotional use.

ContextContexto

This folio comes from a Kalpa-sutra manuscript, a sacred Jain text recounting the lives of the tirthankaras, especially Mahavira. It is dated to western India, Gujarat, last quarter of the 15th century, ca. 1475–1500, and is executed in gum tempera, ink and gold on paper, as recorded by the Cleveland Museum of Art. Such manuscripts were copied and worshipped as acts of religious merit, often lavishly illuminated, though this folio is largely textual. The central red circle and red marginal lines are typical of the pothi format. The scribe and exact workshop are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Jain pothi manuscripts on paper retain the painted central circle even though the original palm-leaf string hole is no longer needed, preserving the memory of an older book form.

I focus on the materiality of this warm ivory paper folio, slightly porous and rippled with time. I notice the irregular, worn edges that speak of five centuries of devout use. The black ink is applied with precise calligraphy and the thin vertical lines in orangey red frame the text. That intense red circle at the bottom center fascinates me, it marks the ritual perforation of the pothi format for the cord that bound the folios together. It is an intimate object, made to be held with both hands.

When I look at this folio from the Kalpa-sutra I see an ordered constellation. The dense horizontal lines of black ink are like parallel orbits crossing the creamy paper background. The two vertical lines in orangey red work as meridians delimiting space. And at the center, that solid red circle looks like a planet or an eclipse paused over the text. Everything is aligned with a sacred geometry, austere yet vibrant, meant to be read up close, like someone watching the night sky with attention and reverence.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This book looks very old and very serious. It is full of little black lines that are letters I do not understand but someone wrote with great care, one by one. It has two red lines on the sides like the edge of a road. What I like most is the red circle in the middle, it looks like a giant button or a paint stain. I imagine a thread went through its little hole to tie all the pages together like a necklace of sacred stories.
