What you would seeLo que verías
A mummiform half-figure carved from limestone, photographed frontally against a neutral gray background. It depicts a person wearing a tripartite wig with finely grooved strands falling straight on both sides of the face and onto the chest, arms crossed over the torso. The closed hands, softened by wear, hold what appear to be hoes and possibly a seed bag, typical attributes of these funerary servants. The face is oval with half-closed or closed eyes, soft cheekbones and a small mouth with a faint smile; the tip of the nose is eroded and dark mottling and pale veining mark the aged stone. A broad collar with incised horizontal lines encircles the neck. The lower third ends in an irregular fracture, as if the base has been lost. Around the midsection and lower area runs a band of incised hieroglyphs, with delicate though worn lines. The surface shows a grayish-brown patina, fine vertical fissures, loss of its original paint, and a granular texture characteristic of exposed limestone. Frontal lighting emphasizes the volume of the chest and wig and casts a soft shadow behind the figure.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the serene face and grooved wig, then move down to the crossed hands and the barely discernible agricultural tools. Linger on the hieroglyphic band around the lower body: it holds the identity and magical purpose of the object.

ContextContexto
According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is the shawabty of Ranefer, dated to 1336–1295 BCE, from Egypt’s New Kingdom (1540–1069 BCE). It is made of limestone, originally painted, and is classified as funerary equipment. Shawabtys, also called shabtis or ushabtis, were placed in tombs to symbolically serve the deceased in the afterlife, performing agricultural labor on their behalf. This example likely comes from a Theban funerary context, although specific find details are not recorded. The inscribed name identifies the owner, Ranefer, and the hieroglyphic text normally contains a spell from the Book of the Dead.

Curious detailDato curioso
Some Egyptian tombs contained hundreds of shawabtys to ensure endless substitutes for work in the afterlife; the Shawabty of Ranefer still shows the spell meant to magically activate it to answer in place of its owner.

I focus on the surface of this painted limestone that has lost almost all its original color and now shows a brownish gray patina with light veins and dark stains. I see the tripartite wig with grooved locks, the incised broad collar and the crossed arms with hands still holding the hoes. It broke at the bottom and the nose is eroded, but the hieroglyphic band around the belly remains legible and reminds us it was made between 1336 and 1295 B.C. to accompany Ranefer in his tomb.

As if looking at a funerary constellation, I imagine this mummiform shawabty as a double meant to work for Ranefer in the afterlife. Its half closed eyes and faint smile do not look at this world, but at another. The band of hieroglyphs crossing the belly is like an orbit of words from the Book of the Dead that activated it to perform agricultural tasks. It is a small limestone servant from the New Kingdom, designed to answer in place of the deceased when called.

It looks like a little stone doll with a big wig and crossed arms as if hugging itself. It has tiny closed eyes and a calm little smile, even though its small nose is chipped and it looks very old with gray and brown spots. The bottom part is missing, as if it broke off. Around its belly it has little lines that are strange letters and on top a pretty collar. They say it was his helper to work in the magic field after dying.
