tabby ground with inwoven tapestry inscription; linen and silk

What you would seeLo que verías

The work is a horizontal rectangular textile, shown frontally and filling the frame. The ground weave is a plain tabby in natural linen, a very pale beige or off-white, with soft wrinkles, faint creases and an irregular hand-spun texture. Subtle ochre stains appear, especially near the lower left corner, and the lower edge is slightly frayed. Almost at the center, a single narrow inscribed band runs from edge to edge like a faint horizon line. The script is executed in tapestry weave with silk thread in a faded terracotta red, now discontinuous due to wear: some letters remain crisp and slightly raised above the surface, others are ghostly traces. The calligraphy, in an early Kufic Arabic style, shows elongated vertical ascenders and a continuous horizontal baseline, with tiny dots and ligatures barely visible. Lighting is even and diffuse, without strong shadows, highlighting the matte quality of the linen against the faint sheen of the silk. The foreground is dominated by the empty textile field; the background is the same cloth continuing. The scale feels intimate, a cut fragment that invites close looking to distinguish each thread and the delicate interplay of preservation and loss.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First take in the broad beige emptiness, then lower your gaze to the thin reddish line crossing the middle. Look closely at how the silk interrupts the linen weave and how wear makes the script flicker in and out of visibility. Notice the wrinkles and stains as traces of age that contrast with the original precision of the weaving.

ContextContexto

According to Cleveland Museum of Art records, this is a tiraz fragment dated to 903–904 CE (AH 291), from Tulunid Egypt during the reign of Emir Harun ibn Khumarawayh under the Abbasid Caliph al-Muktafi. The technique is recorded as tabby ground with inwoven tapestry inscription in linen and silk. Tiraz were official textiles bearing woven or embroidered inscriptions with rulers' names, dates and blessings, made in state-controlled workshops. The maker is unknown, as is typical for such pieces. No further details are given in the source description.

Curious detailDato curioso

Tiraz textiles were prestige garments bestowed by caliphs and emirs as marks of honor; wearing the ruler's name woven into the cloth was like carrying an official document.

What moves me most is the contrast of materials. The base is a matte, slightly coarse plain-weave linen in raw off-white, full of soft wrinkles and a frayed edge at the bottom. On top of it, the inscription is woven in tapestry with terracotta reddish silk that still holds a faint sheen. I see discontinuous letters, some crisp and raised, others ghostly from wear, and scattered ochre stains that speak of time. It is an intimate fragment that asks you to look thread by thread.

To me this cloth is like a clear sky. The wide, pale linen field is the firmament, empty and serene. And crossing it from side to side, like a linear constellation, is that single band with Kufic script in reddish silk. It is a thin horizon that orders the chaos, like the celestial equator. It makes me think about how humans always draw lines of meaning across vastness to find orientation and to remember a date.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little old sheet someone cut out. It is light beige, all wrinkly and with spots like chocolate stains. The fun part is the red line in the middle with funny letters and tall sticks, as if someone wrote a secret message with shiny thread. Some letters are almost gone because they are faded. I want to run my finger along the little stripe and play at figuring out what it says.
