What you would seeLo que verías

A small vertical woodcut in black ink on aged, cream-coloured paper, enclosed by a thick rectangular border. On the right, a tall cylindrical column occupies almost the full height of the image. Tied to it is Christ, seen from behind and in three-quarter view, his body twisted, head bowed and long hair falling forward. His torso is bare, his arms are bound around the column and his legs, covered by short, torn clothing, brace against the floor. To the left stand two tormentors in contemporary clothing with fur trims, doublets and hose. One raises a whip whose strap curls in the air; the other lunges forward, mouth open, pulling Christ's hair with one hand. At the bottom, another scourge made of a bundle of twigs sweeps across the foreground. The background is a dark interior with a large rounded arch, walls built from dense parallel and cross-hatched lines, and a heavy ceiling beam. The contrast between large white areas and deep blacks creates a harsh, nocturnal light. The crowded composition leaves almost no empty space, and the bodies press against the edges of the frame.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start on the right, with Christ's curved back and bowed head, then follow the tormentor's extended arm toward the centre. Next look at the raised whips: one curls in the air, the other, like a bundle of twigs, sweeps across the bottom. That contrast between a still body and violent movement changes the reading of the whole image.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this work as *The Fall and Redemption of Man: Flagellation of Christ*, by the German artist Albrecht Altdorfer (c. 1480–1538), dated to about 1515 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a gift of The Print Club of Cleveland. It is a woodcut, a technique in which the image is carved into wood and then printed in ink on paper. The scene represents an episode of Christ's Passion, his flagellation before the Crucifixion. As its title indicates, it belongs to a series devoted to the fall and redemption of humankind. Precise details about the making of this particular impression are not given in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail is the small monogram visible on the column, at lower right: the signature is not placed in a margin, but integrated into the very object to which Christ is tied.

  1. How does the fact that Christ is shown from behind affect our identification with him?¿Cómo cambia nuestra identificación con Cristo el hecho de que se le muestre de espaldas?
  2. Why might the artist dress the tormentors in clothing from his own time rather than from biblical antiquity?¿Por qué el artista pudo vestir a los verdugos con ropa de su propio tiempo y no de la Antigüedad bíblica?
  3. How do density of line and lack of empty space contribute to the feeling of violence?¿Cómo contribuyen la densidad de las líneas y la falta de espacios vacíos a la sensación de violencia?

If you look closely you will see this little print is not a hand drawing but a woodcut printed in black ink on aged cream paper. I love how Altdorfer achieved such deep blacks and those networks of parallel and crossed lines that build the walls and shadows. The thick rectangular frame holds everything very tightly, the bodies almost touch the edges and the column takes up nearly the whole height. It is a small print yet full of tension and detail.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What catches me here is the light, or rather the darkness. It looks like a night scene inside a great arched room, with a heavy beam above and hatched walls that turn almost black. The contrast between the white areas on Christ's body and the deep blacks creates a harsh light, as if a spotlight illuminated only the center. The column on the right is like an axis of the universe and everything spins around it, with whips suspended in the air.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This picture makes me nervous because there is so much happening at once. On the right Christ is tied to a very tall column, seen from behind with his head bowed. On the left there are two men in old-time clothes hurting him, one lifts a whip that curves in the air and the other pulls his hair. Below there is another bundle of branches. Everything is very crowded with no empty space, it feels like everyone is pushing.
