What you would seeLo que verías

In the center of the image, against a gradient background that shifts from almost black gray at the top to light gray at the bottom, a single stone fragment stands vertically, slightly tilted. Its shape is irregular and elongated: wider at the base of its lower section, narrower and pointed toward the top, like a broken leaf or a wedge. The lower half has an oval, smooth, slightly concave surface in a pale ivory tone, contrasting with the upper half, which is flatter and more angular. Across that upper section, several thin, diagonal incised lines meet near the center, suggesting the veins of a leaf or the folds of a now incomplete motif. The edges are broken, rough, and uneven, with small chips, mineral dust, and darkened areas. The stone is translucent in places, especially at the bottom, where light passes through it and reveals a yellowish cream color; elsewhere it looks opaque, grainy, and worn. On the right edge, near the tip, are modern marks in red ink, only partly visible. At the bottom, a short rectangular fragment protrudes, also broken, hinting at the beginning of a handle or support. Its real scale cannot be judged without a human reference, but the object appears small and fragile.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the oval, smooth depression at the bottom, probably the part of the dish that held a substance. Then follow the incised diagonal lines upward: they let you imagine the complete motif that is now lost. Finally, look at the red marks on the edge; they belong to its modern life as an excavated object.

ContextContexto

The source identifies this piece as a fragment of a cosmetic dish made of travertine, dated to 1353–1337 BCE. It comes from house T.34.1 in the North Suburb of Amarna, Egypt, and was excavated by the Egypt Exploration Society in 1930. It belongs to the New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, during the reign of Akhenaten. In ancient Egypt, small stone vessels and dishes were used to prepare, store, or apply ointments and cosmetic products. Because only a fragment survives and the source provides no further description, its original complete shape and exact use are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

The red marks visible on the right edge are not ancient decoration: they are modern ink notations, probably related to its excavation or recording, and now form part of the object's biography.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause at how fragile this travertine still is after more than three thousand years. I see the lower half smooth, concave and pale ivory, almost translucent where light passes through, and the upper half flat with thin diagonal incised lines meeting near the center. The edges are broken and dusty, with nicks and darkened areas. It was found in house T.34.1 at Amarna and excavated in 1930. It is only a fragment, so I do not reconstruct its full original shape without guessing.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

It reminds me of looking at the sky with limited data, like when we only see a sliver of the moon. This cosmetic dish fragment from the time of Akhenaten, between 1353 and 1337 BCE, is just an elongated wedge, wide at the bottom and pointed at the top. We do not know its complete shape or its exact use. Like a partial eclipse, what is missing makes us imagine. It belongs to the New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty, from the North Suburb of Amarna, but its story remains incomplete.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little broken leaf made of creamy colored stone. The bottom is smooth and glows a little when light hits it, the top has tiny lines like leaf veins. It is broken all around the edges and looks tiny and delicate. I imagine someone in Amarna used it for creams a very long time ago, when Akhenaten was king. Only this little piece is left and at the bottom it has a tiny broken stick like a handle. I want to take care of it so it does not break more.
