Linen: needle lace (cutwork)
What you would seeLo que verías
A long, horizontal textile fragment displayed against a black background, with an elongated rectangular shape and irregular, frayed edges. The central area is a plain-woven linen panel in a raw ivory tone, slightly yellowed with age, showing subtle stains, creases and the fine grid of warp and weft. Ornamental work is concentrated at the two short ends. On the right side, which is better preserved, there is a band of needle lace with geometric openwork: diamond-shaped cutouts, small circular eyelets and a vertical border of interlaced loops forming a scalloped edge. Fine threads stretched into X-shapes and star-like bars span the empty spaces, revealing the black background beneath. On the left side, more damaged and incomplete, only remnants of a symmetrical design remain, with scattered cutwork diamonds and embroidered cross bars and a torn edge where fabric is missing. Even, frontal lighting highlights the porous texture of the linen, the slightly raised thickness of the embroidery thread and the contrast between the opaque center and the airy, translucent lace zones.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start in the plain center and move toward the right end, where the openwork becomes denser and more intricate. Notice the small X-shaped bars and how they hold the voids together. Then compare with the broken left side to imagine the complete piece and its lost symmetry.
ContextContexto
Work catalogued as Lace Fragment by an unknown maker, dated to the 1600s and attributed to Italy. According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, it is made of linen using needle lace in cutwork technique. It belongs to the Textiles department and entered the collection as part of the Bequest of Louise Tifft Brown. No original description survives and its precise original function is not recorded, though fragments of this kind probably belonged to dress trimming, table linen or household furnishings. The seventeenth century was a period of major development for Italian lace.

Curious detailDato curioso
Cutwork is made by cutting threads from a base fabric and securing the edges with stitching, a technique that led to the highly prized Venetian needle lace of the 1600s.

What moves me most about this fragment is its material honesty. I see the raw ivory linen, yellowed with age, with wrinkles and small stains that tell its history. In the center the tight, opaque weave holds firm, while at the edges the needle lace opens into openwork of diamonds, eyelets and arches. The right side is better preserved, the left shows deterioration with loose threads and torn edges. Everything speaks of fragility and care.

When I look at this linen on a black background I think of a night sky. The center is like a dense, opaque zone, and at the ends embroidered constellations appear. On the right side I spot diamonds, circular eyelets and a border of interlaced arches ending in points. Threads form X-shaped crosses and little stars suspended over empty spaces that reveal the black behind them. The left side is fainter, like a fragmented galaxy. It is geometry that feels like astronomy made with a needle.

It looks like an old, long napkin that is a little torn. In the middle it is thick cream-colored fabric with tiny wrinkles and spots, and you cannot see through it. On the edges it has lace with little holes shaped like diamonds and circles, and threads that make crosses and little stars. On the right side it looks pretty and complete with little points, on the left side it is ripped and frayed. If you hold it to the light, you can see the black background behind through the holes.

Against a very dark background, the light linen of the fragment stands out. What color is the background where the textile is displayed?
HintPista
Look behind the openwork lace, the color you see through the little holes.
#2
On the openwork edges there are threads forming a letter or symbol with two crossed lines. What shape do those loose threads make?
HintPista
Search in the empty spaces of the lace, especially on the right side, for thin threads that cross each other.

The lace has several cut-out geometric motifs. Name one of the shapes repeated on the right border: diamonds, circular eyelets or arches?

HintPista
Observe the scalloped border on the right, with openwork that lets the black background show through.
