Gum tempera and gold on paper

What you would seeLo que verías

The horizontal scene unfolds against a mottled grey, almost empty background, densely crossed by thin arrows. At upper left, Krishna, with dark skin, a golden crown topped by a black plume, and a long yellow robe trimmed with gold, rides a huge green bird with layered scales, a sharp red beak, and a tiny crown on its head. Krishna draws a red bow, carries a red quiver full of white arrows on his back, and raises a golden ring-shaped weapon. A long white garland falls across his torso. Opposite him, at right, a golden chariot with a large brown wooden wheel is pulled by a pink, dark-spotted creature with two canine heads baring their teeth. A warrior in red, wearing a crown and holding a large black shield, rides in it. Above, another crowned warrior in green throws a long spear; below, a smaller archer in pink aims upward. Between the two sides float severed heads: a pink animal head, a white head, and at lower left a huge white fish cut into three separated pieces. The aged paper shows stains, wear, and losses, especially at lower left.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with Krishna and Garuda at upper left, then follow the arrows toward the chariot on the right. Notice the severed heads floating across the grey field; that detail turns a dense battle into the proof of its violence. Finally, look down at the fish cut into three parts, where the disorder becomes almost surreal.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a painting from about 1840, made in the Pahari kingdoms of Northern India by an unknown author, using gum tempera and gold on paper. Its title places it within an Usha-Aniruddha, a story cycle in which Usha, daughter of King Bana, falls in love with Aniruddha, grandson of Krishna, and the conflict with Bana leads Krishna into battle. The exact page and moment of the manuscript are not stated in the source data, so that specific identification remains unconfirmed. The work belongs to the museum's Department of Indian and Southeast Asian Art.

Curious detailDato curioso

Garuda, the large green bird carrying Krishna, is traditionally his mount, or vahana, and here he also wears a small golden crown, like the human and divine combatants.”

  1. How does the floating, almost weightless arrangement of combatants change our sense of a battle?¿Cómo cambia la idea de batalla el que los combatientes floten casi sin peso en el espacio?
  2. Why do you think the severed fish and animal heads receive as much attention as the warriors themselves?¿Por qué crees que el pez y las cabezas de animales cercenadas reciben tanta atención como los guerreros?

What holds me most is the paper itself. The mottled grey background is crossed by dozens of very fine arrows, but at the lower left the support is stained, worn and missing small areas, as if the battle had also bitten the sheet. I look at the 1840 gum tempera and gold on paper: the yellow of Krishna's tunic with golden borders still shines, like his crown and the golden ring he lifts. The green bird with layered scales, red beak and little crown, and the chariot with brown wheel pulled by the pink two-headed creature show the fragile, precise Pahari craft that I try to respect.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I keep looking upward, where there is no painted sky but a mottled grey void crossed by white arrows like a meteor shower. On the left, dark-skinned Krishna with golden crown and black plume rides the large green bird and draws his red bow with the red quiver on his back. On the right, the golden chariot advances and warriors reply with spear and bow. At the center severed heads float and below a white fish split into three pieces. It is a night of combat without stars, only trajectories.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This fight is full of weird things and I love hunting for them! Krishna is flying on a giant green bird with dragon-like scales, red beak and a tiny little crown. He wears a bright yellow tunic, a white garland and two weapons at once: a red bow and a golden ring. On the other side there is a golden chariot with a huge wheel pulled by a pink animal with two puppy heads baring their teeth. In the air there are arrows everywhere, floating heads and even a white fish cut into three pieces.
