What you would seeLo que verías

This horizontal miniature is split into two contrasting zones. On the left, a palace architecture with pale pink walls and arched balconies holds several demonic figures with blue and red skin, fiercely expressive faces, fangs and crowns; they watch in fear from upper balconies, a staircase and a chariot at the bottom. On the right, in an open landscape with a gray-blue sky and calm water, the goddess Durga, with light skin and a red and gold dress and crown, rides her tiger and extends a hand while holding a lotus flower. Beside her advances Kali, a skeletal female figure with gray-blue skin, bristling black hair, tongue out, necklace of skulls and skirt of severed arms; she carries a sword and a bowl. In the lower foreground, the battlefield shows beheaded bodies, intense red blood, fallen demons and a gray being drinking from a skull. The surface is worn, with pigment loss and craquelure revealing the paper, framed by a black border decorated with white floral motifs.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the pink diagonal that divides demons and goddesses. Then pause on the pair of Kali and Durga on the tiger and lower your gaze to the bloody turmoil in the foreground, where each gesture of horror changes the meaning of the divine victory.

What strikes me is how worn the surface is, with pigment loss and craquelure that reveal the paper underneath, something common in a gum tempera on paper nearly two centuries old. The pale pink palace walls and the black border with white floral motifs frame the scene very well. You can see the delicate work in gold and ink, and how the intense red of the blood is still vivid against the greyish blue of the sky and the calm water.

When I look at this miniature I think about how it splits space into two different skies. On the left, the enclosure of the palace with its balconies and arches where the frightened demons crowd together. On the right, the open landscape under a greyish blue sky where Durga on her tiger and Kali with her skull necklace advance. It is like seeing fear locked inside facing the vastness opening up, as if the battle happened between an inner night and an outer dawn.

It is scary and exciting at the same time! On one side are the blue and red monsters with fangs hiding in their pink palace, all scared. On the other side comes Durga looking pretty in her red and gold dress on top of a tiger, and next to her Kali who is a bit scary with her tongue sticking out and her skirt made of arms. Down below there is lots of red blood and bodies on the ground. I like counting the skulls on her necklace and seeing the bowl she holds in her hand.
