What you would seeLo que verías

A dense black-and-white engraving filling a vertical rectangle with a crowded sacred interior. At the centre, on a canopied bed with gathered curtains, the Virgin sits upright against pillows, veiled and haloed, hands softly clasped, eyes half-closed in calm repose. A youthful curly-haired apostle leans toward her from the right side of the bed, offering a tall lighted taper and holding her arm. At the foot of the bed in the immediate foreground, a bearded apostle kneels barefoot, clutching a tall cross-topped staff and reading an open book resting on the mattress edge, his heavy drapery pooling in deeply hatched, angular folds. To the right of the Virgin another bearded elder bends close, while behind the bed a tight throng of about a dozen apostles presses in, with curled hair, beards and voluminous robes rendered through intricate cross-hatching that sculpts light and shadow without colour. The chamber is suggested by wooden beams, a draped cloth and the bed’s canopy. In the lower right foreground stands an ornate Gothic candlestick with a single unlit candle. At bottom centre the monogram M + S is visible. The print displays extraordinary control of line weight, texture in fabrics, hair and wood, and a luminous chiaroscuro built entirely from engraved strokes.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the Virgin and the lit taper offered to her, then trace the kneeling apostle’s staff from the floor up to the book on the bed. Notice how the canopy and curtains frame the group like a stage, and how the empty candlestick in the foreground quietly alters the mood.

ContextContexto

This is The Death of the Virgin, an engraving by Martin Schongauer (German, c. 1450–1491), dated about 1470–75, as recorded by the Cleveland Museum of Art where the impression is held. Schongauer was among the most influential Northern European printmakers before Dürer, and his engravings circulated widely as models. The subject, the Dormition of Mary surrounded by the apostles, was central to late medieval devotion. The M S monogram at the bottom is his usual signature. No further description is provided by the source, so the state of the impression and its full provenance beyond the Gift of Leonard C. Hanna Jr. are not recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso

Schongauer’s engraving technique was so admired that painters and sculptors across Europe copied his compositions, and the technique of building tone solely with the burin became a standard for Northern printmaking.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. How does the pairing of a lit candle by the Virgin and an unlit one in the foreground shape the meaning of the scene?¿Cómo cambia la lectura el contraste entre la vela encendida junto a la Virgen y la apagada en primer plano?
  2. What does the press of bodies and heavy drapery around a narrow bed suggest about community and mourning?¿Qué te comunica la aglomeración de cuerpos y telas alrededor de una cama tan estrecha?
  3. If you could only sense line density, what would the darkest, most cross-hatched areas tell you about focus and emotion?

I focus on the mark that fills almost the entire vertical rectangle. Schongauer builds volume without color, only with extremely dense cross-hatching. Look at the heavy folds of the mantles falling to the floor, the curly beards and the wooden beams in the background: every texture is engraved with a precision that must have required absolute control of the burin around 1470-75. The white of the paper left as light concentrates on the lighted candle held by the young apostle next to the Virgin. It is a lesson in how black and white also shapes volume.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this chamber as a closed night lit from within. The Virgin lies on her canopied bed, crowned with a fine veil and hands joined over her chest, and to her left a young apostle brings close a long lighted candle that works like a small sun in the composition. The rest of the bearded figures in tunics form a compact constellation of mourning around her. Even the unlit gothic candlestick in the foreground on the right seems to be waiting for its turn to be lit. Everything revolves around that small light.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like everyone came to say goodbye to the Virgin in her little bed with curtains. She is lying down with her veil and little hands together as if she were praying in her sleep. I like to count the bearded men squeezed behind the bed, all with wrinkled mantles like blankets. In front there is a barefoot man reading a big book and holding a tall staff with a cross. And on the floor there is a pretty candlestick with an unlit candle. Down in the middle there are little letters M S which are the artist's signature.

In the foreground on the right there is a gothic object with an openwork base holding an unlit candle, what is it?

    HintPista

Look in the lower right corner, in front of the figures, it is metallic and holds an unlit candle.

  2. #2

What double initial signs the print in the lower center?

    HintPista

They are two intertwined letters at the bottom center, the monogram of the German engraver.

  3. #3

What long lighted object does the young apostle hold to the left of the Virgin?

    HintPista

It is the only living light source in the scene, a light cylinder the apostle brings close to Mary's hand.
