What you would seeLo que verías

Against a plain black background with no shadows, a very long, narrow strip of ivory lace, slightly yellowed with age, stretches horizontally. It occupies the center of the image from left to right, and its elongated proportion makes it clear that it is a textile edging or trim, not a complete garment. The upper edge is almost straight, while the lower one forms soft waves and uneven scallops that fall like small hills. In the foreground one can see the extremely fine weave of linen threads: dense, almost opaque areas alternate with transparent openwork, tiny dots, and mesh-like grids. The motif repeats along the strip: plant-like curves, scrolls, fan-like shapes, rectangles with bands, and small clusters of dots recalling stylized grapes or flowers. Looking calmly, one can notice joins, slight unevenness in the weaving, and a grayer tone in some sections, signs of its age and handling. The light is even and frontal, with no glare, and allows the minimal relief of the interlaced threads to be seen. At the right end there is a small rectangular white label, sewn or attached, blank at this distance. No scale is given, but the fineness of the design suggests work meant to be seen up close, on the edge of another fabric.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the lower scalloped edge from one end to the other and notice its gentle rhythm. Then look closely at one repeated motif and compare it with the next: the small differences reveal the handwork. Finally, notice how the solid areas make the open spaces readable.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this piece is titled Lace Edging, its maker is unknown, it dates to the 1700s, and it comes from the culture associated with Binche, Belgium. It is made of linen using the bobbin lace technique, and it belongs to the Textiles department of the Cleveland Museum of Art, in The Frances McIntosh Sherwin Collection. Binche is known for bobbin laces with continuous patterns and very fine grounds, although the source does not say what garment or specific use this strip was made for, who made it, or what its history was before it reached the museum. It probably served as a decorative trim sewn to the edge of another textile piece.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation: although the pattern repeats along the whole strip, it never repeats perfectly; tiny changes in the dots, curves, and density betray the continuous decisions of the hands that made it.

  1. What does it mean that such delicate work remains anonymous while it is preserved in a museum under a collection name?¿Qué significa que un trabajo tan delicado permanezca anónimo mientras se conserva en un museo bajo el nombre de una colección?
  2. How does your perception of the strip change when you imagine it sewn to clothing or household linen, moving and in use, rather than isolated on black?¿Cómo cambia la percepción de la tira al imaginarla cosida a una prenda o a un lino doméstico, en movimiento y en uso, en vez de aislada sobre negro?
  3. What can the small irregularities in the pattern tell us about the time, patience, and skill needed to make it?¿Qué pueden decirnos las pequeñas irregularidades del motivo sobre el tiempo, la paciencia y la destreza necesarios para hacerlo?

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely you will see what I notice first: linen in an ivory tone slightly yellowed with age, with the very low relief of bobbin lace threads. The upper edge is almost straight because it was sewn to another textile, while the lower edge forms soft waves and scallops. I focus on the dense almost opaque areas and the sheer openwork. There are small irregularities, grayish tones and joins that speak of its eighteenth century age and the anonymous hands from Binche, Belgium.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this long strip like a constellation stretched horizontally across a black sky. Against that smooth background appear clusters of tiny dots like stars, fans, scrolls and striped rectangles repeating like orbits. What looks delicate is actually a precise structure of interlaced linen threads. As the black mounting background shows, contrast makes the tiny visible: a textile universe from the eighteenth century made in Binche to be seen up close.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a white elegant snake lying on a black blanket. The top is nice and straight and the bottom has little hills going up and down. If you look with a magnifier it has little flowers, fans and tiny grapes made of threads. I like its bone color and that on one tip it has a tiny little white label. Someone made it by hand a very long time ago with many bobbins and a lot of patience to put it on the edge of another cloth!
