Linen: bobbin lace
What you would seeLo que verías
The piece is laid out horizontally, stretched from one end of the frame to the other over a plain, slightly textured black background that throws its pale ivory color into relief. It is a very long, narrow strip of lace, with rounded ends and edges that undulate in small, regular scallops. At first glance it looks fragile and almost transparent; seen closely, a fine net ground appears, like gauze made of tiny, even openings, over which denser, more opaque motifs are worked in cream-colored linen thread. All along the band, bouquets and garlands recur without ever being quite identical: open flowers, buds, curving leaves, intertwining stems, and small openwork forms like pinecones or diamonds. A few floral medallions stand out near the center, ringed by vegetal scrolls that fill the space without leaving large gaps. Along the edges, small dotted rosettes alternate with the wavy border. There is no human figure and no object to give scale, so its real size is hard to judge; what dominates is the contrast between the darkness of the ground, the lightness of the thread, and the patient repetition of the pattern, interrupted by subtle variations that only emerge on slow looking.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the whole strip from end to end to appreciate its length and scalloped outline against the black ground. Then move closer to one of the denser floral medallions and compare it with the almost transparent mesh around it. Notice how no motif is exactly repeated: that small variation changes the piece from a decorative border into evidence of patient handwork.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a pair of lace lappets dated 1740–60, attributed to Belgium, possibly Mechelen, and made by an unknown maker in linen bobbin lace. Lappets were the long streamers that framed the face as part of a woman's headdress. The source notes that very few complete lace headdresses from the 1700s and 1800s survive; a complete set consisted of three pieces, and this long, narrow strip formed the lappets. The exact place of manufacture is not certain, as the question mark after Mechelen in the source indicates.

Curious detailDato curioso
According to the museum, a complete lace headdress of this period was made up of three separate pieces; this strip, which looks like a single band, actually formed the pair of streamers worn on either side of the face.

Come closer and you will see why I can spend hours with a magnifier on this piece. It is a very long and narrow strip in a pale ivory tone, bobbin lace made with linen thread, laid against a black background that makes it float. What looks like gauze is actually a fine net of even little openings with denser motifs on top: open flowers, buds, curved leaves and shapes like little pinecones or diamonds. I love how the pattern repeats but is never identical and how the edge finishes in soft waves.

When I look at it I think of constellations on a night sky. The lace strip is like a band of ivory light cut out against the deep black background of the frame, full of plant-like stars. The ground mesh is a regular net, like a grid of the universe, and on top denser nebulae appear in the form of flowers, garlands and scrolls that intertwine. There is no single center, everything is repetition with subtle variations. I like to imagine each dotted rosette on the edge as a small system spinning.

It looks like a magic scarf for a princess that weighs nothing. It is super long and skinny, in a light creamy color, with rounded tips and the whole edge wavy like ice cream frills. If you peek you see lots of tiny little holes and on top flowers, folded little leaves and shapes like pinecones that make tangled paths. No part is exactly the same as another and you have to look slowly to spot the changes. I like it because it seems to float on the black without falling.
