Fragment of Lace EdgingFragmento de ribete de encaje
Unknown maker / Autor desconocido · 1600s · Italy, Venice
Linen: needle lace (Venetian flat point)
What you would seeLo que verías
The piece fills almost the entire frame, photographed straight-on against a plain black background with no shadows. It is a horizontal rectangular fragment of lace in a bone to ivory color, slightly yellowed with age, its four edges uneven, cut, and somewhat frayed. It is not shown as a complete edging; it looks like a cut sample. Its surface is a dense, continuous web of linen threads. Curved stems cross and coil into scrolls in every direction, forming a network of vegetal motifs: small leaves, petals, schematic flowers, and buds. Between them lies an irregular mesh of black openings, like cells of varying sizes, which is the background showing through the openwork. There is no central figure and no obvious symmetry; the rhythm comes from the undulating repetition. The light is even and frontal, with no harsh highlights, revealing differences in relief: some areas are flat and slightly translucent, with very fine stitches, while others, such as the veins of the leaves, are lightly raised and more grainy in texture. Small breaks, slack areas, and loose fibers are visible, especially along the margins. Its actual scale cannot be determined from the image, but the regularity of the work suggests meticulous labor seen up close.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the whole surface and let the black gaps become leaves and stems in reverse. Then move closer to one curl and follow how a thread turns into a leaf, a flower, and then netting again. Noticing that there is no central motif changes the reading: the value lies in the patient repetition.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is a fragment of lace edging by an unknown maker, dated to the 1600s and attributed to Venice, Italy. It is made of linen using needle lace, in the technique known as Venetian flat point. It belongs to the Department of Textiles at the Cleveland Museum of Art, in The Frances McIntosh Sherwin Collection. We do not know who made it, what garment or object it was intended for, or its original size. At that time Venice was a renowned center for fine needle lace, a very slow handcraft probably produced in workshops or in specialized domestic settings.

Curious detailDato curioso
In needle lace, the design is not woven on a loom or cut from an existing cloth: it is built stitch by stitch with a needle and a single thread, so the many black 'spots' in the image are empty space, not another material.

I pause to see how this fragment breathes. Against the black background I see a horizontal rectangle in bone to ivory, slightly yellowed with age, with cut and frayed edges. It is hand-worked linen in needle lace, Venetian flat point. I notice the relief: some flat, translucent areas with very fine stitches and other more granular, raised areas along the leaf veins. I see small breaks and loose threads along the margins. It is delicate, dense and very labor-intensive, although we do not know what garment it was for.

I see this lace as a star map. The black background is my night sky and the gaps in the weave are irregular constellations letting darkness through. The curved stems and scrolls are orbits crossing without central symmetry, like trajectories. From the record I know it is a 17th-century fragment attributed to Venice, made of linen, by an unknown maker. It is not a complete border, but a cut sample. Its wavy rhythm reminds me of vegetal nebulae seen under even, frontal light.

It looks like a giant lace cookie on a black tablecloth. It is light bone colored, like old yellowish white, and its edges are all nibbled with little hairs sticking out. It is full of little plants, leaves and flowers that tangle and swirl like snails. Between the threads there are many little black holes of different sizes where the background shows through. There is no picture in the center, everything repeats like waves. I like to hunt for the stems that curl around.
